Lens Stabilizer Error

Panasonic Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

'Lens Stabilizer Error' means the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) system inside the lens isn't working correctly.
Either the OIS motor has failed, the contacts are dirty, or the camera-lens communication is degraded.
Power off, remove and reattach the lens cleanly.
If the error persists, switch OIS off temporarily as a workaround.
Repair: 150–400 USD lens service depending on lens model.

Affected Models

  • Panasonic Lumix GH5/GH6
  • Panasonic Lumix S5/S5 II
  • Panasonic Lumix G9
  • Panasonic Lumix G100/G110

Common Causes

  • OIS motor failed inside the lens
  • Lens contacts dirty preventing OIS commands
  • Lens dropped or impacted (OIS mechanism shifted)
  • Lens past service life
  • Body OIS controller fault (less common)

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and remove the lens.

    Turn the camera off.
    Remove the lens carefully.
Wait 30 seconds — clears latched stabilizer state.

  2. Clean the contacts.

On the back of the lens, look for the gold contacts (12 contacts on most Panasonic lenses).
Wipe with a clean dry microfiber cloth.
Same for the contacts inside the camera lens mount.
Dirty contacts prevent OIS commands from reaching the lens.

  3. Reattach and test.

Mount the lens until it clicks into place.
    Power on.
Take a test shot with OIS enabled.
If the error doesn't return, the contacts were the issue.
If the error returns, the lens has internal stabilizer issues.

  4. Disable OIS as a workaround.

If OIS is genuinely failed, turn it off in the lens menu (or via the OIS switch on the lens body).
The camera and lens still work fine without OIS — you'll need slightly higher shutter speeds for handheld shots.
Modern Panasonic bodies have IBIS that compensates.

  5. Send the lens to Panasonic service.

    OIS repair is lens-internal — not user-fixable.
Cost: 150–300 USD for entry-level lenses, 300–500+ for telephoto.
For older or entry-level lenses, replacement may be more economical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the camera still work with OIS off?

Yes — disable OIS via the lens switch or camera menu.
The camera shoots normally without it.
You'll need higher shutter speeds for handheld shots (1/focal length minimum, faster in low light).
Modern Panasonic bodies have IBIS that partially compensates for missing OIS.

Can dropping the lens cause this?

Yes — direct impact on the lens can shift the OIS group out of alignment.
The error appears the next time you power on with that lens.
If the error appeared right after a drop, that's almost certainly the cause.
Don't keep using the lens — service it before further damage.
