ABS Warning Light

Ford Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

The Ford ABS warning light means the Anti-lock Braking System has detected a fault. Regular brakes still work normally, but ABS will not prevent wheel lockup in emergency braking. Get the ABS fault code read — most auto parts stores do this for free.

Affected Models

  • Ford F-150
  • Ford Escape
  • Ford Focus
  • Ford Explorer
  • Ford Mustang
  • Ford Edge
  • Ford Ranger
  • Ford Transit

Common Causes

  • Wheel speed sensor dirty or failed — the most common cause on all Ford models
  • Tone ring (reluctor ring) on the wheel hub cracked or corroded
  • ABS module failure — more common on high-mileage F-150 and Explorer models
  • ABS fuse blown
  • Low brake fluid triggering combined ABS and brake warning lights
  • Wiring harness damage from road debris or under-car impacts

How to Fix It

  1. Read the ABS fault code.

Plug an OBD-II scanner into the port under the dashboard (driver's side, near the steering column). ABS codes are C-prefix chassis codes — common Ford codes include C1145 and C1155 (wheel speed sensor), C1185 (ABS power relay). The code tells you which wheel sensor or component has failed.

  2. Inspect the wheel speed sensors.

Ford wheel speed sensors sit at each wheel hub and are vulnerable to corrosion, particularly in rust-belt states. With the wheel removed, inspect the sensor body and wiring for rust, cracked insulation, or broken connectors. Sensors on the front wheels are more accessible and more commonly replaced.

  3. Check the ABS fuse.

Check the fuse box under the hood and the passenger side fuse panel for the ABS fuse — typically 30A or 40A. Replace a blown fuse with the same rating. If the replacement fuse blows immediately, there is a short circuit in the ABS wiring requiring professional diagnosis.

  4. Check brake fluid level.

Open the brake fluid reservoir under the hood — it is a translucent plastic container near the firewall. If the level is below MIN, top up with DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid as specified in the owner's manual. Low brake fluid often triggers both the ABS warning and the red brake warning light on Ford vehicles.

  5. Inspect the ABS module on high-mileage models.

Ford F-150, Explorer, and Expedition ABS modules are prone to failure from corrosion on the hydraulic unit connections. A failed ABS module typically stores multiple ABS codes at the same time. ABS modules can often be rebuilt by a specialist at lower cost than a dealer replacement.

When to Call a Professional

If the ABS light is accompanied by the red brake warning light, have the vehicle inspected immediately — the brake system may have a more serious fault.
