Traction Control / AdvanceTrac Warning
Ford Vehicle
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Ford traction control or AdvanceTrac warning light means the stability system has detected a fault. The most common cause is a wheel speed sensor fault — the same sensor used by ABS. If the ABS light is also on, check the ABS system first.
Affected Models
- Ford F-150
- Ford Escape
- Ford Focus
- Ford Explorer
- Ford Mustang
- Ford Edge
- Ford Ranger
- Ford Transit
Common Causes
- Wheel speed sensor failed — traction control uses the same sensors as ABS; a failed sensor disables both systems
- Steering angle sensor fault — traction control compares steering input to vehicle direction
- Yaw rate sensor fault
- ABS module fault disabling both ABS and stability control
- Traction control manually switched off — a button press accidentally disabling it
How to Fix It
-
Check if traction control was manually turned off.
Ford AdvanceTrac can be disabled with the traction control button (usually labeled TCS or shows a car with skid lines). If it was accidentally pressed, the light illuminates and the system is off. Press the button again to re-enable traction control — the light should go out.
-
Check if the ABS light is also on.
Traction control and ABS share wheel speed sensors — a failed sensor disables both systems and lights both warning lights simultaneously. If both the ABS and traction control lights are on, the fix is almost always a wheel speed sensor. Read the fault code to confirm which wheel's sensor has failed.
-
Read the fault code.
Connect an OBD-II scanner and read chassis (C-prefix) codes. Common Ford stability system codes: C1145 (right front wheel speed sensor), C1155 (left front), U0121 (communication fault with ABS module). The code tells you exactly which sensor or module to replace.
-
Check for road conditions that trigger normal activation.
The traction control light may flash (not stay on) when the system is actively working — on snow, gravel, or wet roads, this is normal. A light that flashes momentarily on a slippery surface and then goes out indicates the system is working correctly. Only a light that stays on permanently indicates a fault requiring diagnosis.
-
Inspect the steering angle sensor.
The steering angle sensor measures how far the steering wheel is turned. After a wheel alignment or if the battery was disconnected, the steering angle sensor may lose its calibration, triggering the AdvanceTrac warning. The sensor can be recalibrated with an OBD-II scanner that supports Ford ABS/stability system resets.
When to Call a Professional
Persistent AdvanceTrac and ABS warnings together indicate a wheel speed sensor or ABS module issue. Have the fault code read to confirm the specific component.
