Transmission Fault / Wrench Warning for Gearbox

Ford Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Ford transmission fault warnings often indicate the 6-speed PowerShift DCT on Focus and Fiesta, or the 6F35 automatic on Escape and Edge, has a fault. Do not ignore — read the fault code before deciding on service, as some faults are software-related and can be resolved with a Ford dealer calibration update.

Affected Models

  • Ford Focus (2011–2018)
  • Ford Fiesta (2011–2019)
  • Ford Escape
  • Ford Edge
  • Ford Explorer
  • Ford F-150

Common Causes

  • PowerShift dual-clutch transmission (DPS6) clutch wear — shuddering, jerking during low-speed engagement
  • Transmission fluid degraded or low — Ford 6F35 and 6F50 require specific Mercon LV fluid
  • Solenoid failure in the valve body causing incorrect gear selection
  • TCM (transmission control module) software needing recalibration — Ford has issued multiple TSBs for transmission behavior
  • Torque converter shudder on F-150 10-speed (10R80) transmission

How to Fix It

  1. Read the transmission fault code.

Connect an OBD-II scanner that reads powertrain codes — transmission faults typically show as P07XX or P08XX codes. Common Ford transmission codes: P0730 (incorrect gear ratio), P0741 (torque converter clutch), P0717 (turbine speed sensor). The code identifies the specific component or calibration issue.

  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition.

Many Ford transmissions do not have a traditional dipstick — fluid level is checked via a fill plug on the transmission pan. Incorrect fluid level or using the wrong fluid type (Ford requires Mercon LV for most 6-speed automatics) causes shifting problems and fault codes. A Ford dealer or transmission specialist can check fluid level correctly.

  3. Check for Ford Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs).

Ford has issued numerous TSBs for the Focus and Fiesta PowerShift transmission, the F-150 10-speed, and other models. Enter your VIN at ford.com or ask a dealer to check for applicable TSBs or recalls. Some transmission shudder and rough shifting issues are fully addressed by a free software recalibration from a Ford dealer.

  4. Avoid driving in limp mode.

If the Ford is stuck in a fixed gear (limp mode), drive carefully at reduced speed to a safe location or repair facility. Do not rev the engine high or force upshifts — limp mode is protecting the transmission from further damage. Switching the engine off and restarting may temporarily clear limp mode — but the underlying fault remains.

  5. Have the transmission serviced.

For PowerShift (Focus/Fiesta): the clutch packs are a known wear item — a dealer repair or independent specialist can replace the clutch and reseal the unit. For F-150 and Explorer: transmission fluid change and TCM software update often resolves shudder and hesitation complaints. Get a second opinion from an independent transmission specialist before agreeing to a full replacement.

When to Call a Professional

Ford PowerShift (DPS6) transmission faults on Focus and Fiesta have been the subject of widespread complaints and technical service bulletins. If your Ford has a known DPS6 issue, consult a Ford dealer for applicable TSB repairs or recalls.
