EPS / Power Steering Warning Light
Honda Vehicle
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Honda EPS (Electric Power Steering) warning light means the electric power steering system has detected a fault and may have reduced or removed steering assistance. The car can still be steered but will feel very heavy. Restart the engine — an EPS fault that clears on restart is often a software glitch or low voltage.
Affected Models
- Honda Civic
- Honda CR-V
- Honda Jazz
- Honda HR-V
- Honda Accord
- Honda Fit
- Honda City
Common Causes
- EPS control unit software fault — a temporary glitch that a restart clears
- EPS motor overheated from excessive steering input at low speed (parking maneuvers)
- Battery or alternator voltage issue causing the EPS control unit to fault
- Steering angle sensor fault or lost calibration after battery disconnect
- EPS motor or torque sensor failed — less common but requires professional repair
How to Fix It
-
Restart the engine.
Switch the engine off, wait 30 seconds, and restart. Honda EPS software faults and overtemperature conditions self-reset after the engine is switched off and the EPS motor cools. If the warning clears and does not return, the fault was temporary — but monitor for recurrence.
-
Check the battery and charging system.
Honda EPS relies on adequate battery voltage to operate — a weak battery causes EPS faults, especially on cold starts. Check battery terminals for corrosion and have the battery load-tested if it is over 4 years old. A failing alternator can also cause intermittent EPS warnings as voltage drops under load.
-
Recalibrate the steering angle sensor.
After a battery disconnect, wheel alignment, or certain repairs, the Honda steering angle sensor loses its calibration — the EPS control unit detects an inconsistency and illuminates the warning. Drive in a straight line at 30 km/h or above for about 30 seconds — on many Honda models, this recalibrates the sensor automatically. Alternatively, a Honda-compatible scanner can perform a steering angle sensor reset.
-
Allow EPS to cool after heavy steering use.
Repeatedly turning the steering to full lock during parking maneuvers (especially with a cold or idling engine) can overheat the EPS motor. The EPS system temporarily reduces or removes assistance to prevent damage. Stop the maneuver, switch off the engine, wait 5–10 minutes, then restart — the EPS should return to full operation.
-
Read EPS fault codes.
A Honda-compatible OBD-II scanner can read EPS fault codes — look for codes starting with 67 (Honda EPS system codes). Persistent EPS codes 67-10 or 67-11 indicate a torque sensor fault. Code 67-1 indicates the EPS motor itself — these require replacement of the electric power steering rack assembly.
When to Call a Professional
If the EPS warning does not clear after a restart and the steering remains heavy, the EPS motor or control unit has failed. This requires diagnosis at a Honda-authorized workshop.
