ABS Warning Light
Jeep Vehicle
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
The Jeep ABS warning light means the Anti-lock Braking System has detected a fault and disabled itself. Your regular brakes still work, but you lose the anti-lock function — wheels can lock during hard braking. Get the ABS fault code read with an OBD-II scanner to identify the failing component.
Affected Models
- Jeep Wrangler
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Jeep Cherokee
- Jeep Compass
- Jeep Renegade
- Jeep Gladiator
Common Causes
- Wheel speed sensor dirty, damaged, or failed — the most common cause on Jeep models
- Reluctor ring (tone ring) on the wheel hub cracked or corroded
- ABS fuse blown
- ABS module fault
- Low brake fluid level triggering a combined ABS/brake warning
- Wheel bearing failure causing erratic speed sensor readings
How to Fix It
-
Read the ABS fault code.
Connect an OBD-II scanner to the port under the dashboard (driver's side). ABS codes start with C (chassis) — common Jeep ABS codes include C0031, C0034, C0037 (wheel speed sensor faults). The code tells you exactly which wheel's sensor has failed, saving guesswork.
-
Inspect the wheel speed sensors.
Wheel speed sensors sit at each wheel hub and can be damaged by road debris, rust, or physical impact. With the wheel off, inspect the sensor and its wiring harness for corrosion, cuts, or broken connectors. Cleaning a dirty sensor with brake cleaner sometimes clears the light without replacement.
-
Check the ABS fuse.
Open the fuse box (driver's side dash or under hood) and check the ABS fuse — typically 30–40A. Replace a blown fuse with one of the exact same amperage. If the fuse blows again immediately, there is a wiring short that requires professional diagnosis.
-
Check brake fluid level.
Open the brake fluid reservoir under the hood and confirm the level is between MIN and MAX. Low brake fluid can trigger a combined ABS/brake warning on Jeep models. If fluid is low, check for a brake fluid leak before simply topping it up.
-
Check wheel bearings.
A worn wheel bearing causes the reluctor ring attached to it to spin erratically, producing false or missing signals to the ABS module. Listen for a humming or rumbling noise that changes with vehicle speed — this indicates a worn bearing. Wheel bearing replacement also resolves the associated ABS warning.
When to Call a Professional
ABS faults require reading the specific fault code. If the ABS and brake warning lights are both on, have the vehicle inspected immediately — brake system integrity may be compromised.
