EPS Warning Light / Electric Power Steering Fault

Kia Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Kia EPS warning light means the electric power steering system has a fault. Steering still works but may feel heavy. A restart often clears a temporary EPS fault — if the warning returns, the EPS control unit, motor, or torque sensor needs professional diagnosis.

Affected Models

  • Kia Sportage
  • Kia Sorento
  • Kia Forte
  • Kia Soul
  • Kia Seltos
  • Kia Stinger
  • Kia Telluride
  • Kia EV6

Common Causes

  • Temporary EPS software fault — clears on restart
  • Battery voltage issue causing EPS control unit to fault
  • Steering torque sensor fault — sensor measures driver steering effort and may fail
  • EPS motor overheated from excessive full-lock steering
  • EPS control unit failure — less common, but known on high-mileage Kia Sportage models

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the engine.

Switch off the engine, wait 30 seconds, and restart. Temporary EPS software faults on Kia — including those triggered by low battery voltage at startup — typically clear with a restart. If the warning does not return after the restart, monitor for recurrence — if it reappears regularly, the battery or EPS components need inspection.

  2. Check the battery voltage.

EPS units require stable 12V power — a battery below 11.5V causes EPS faults, especially in cold weather. Have the battery load-tested if it is more than 3 years old. Also check the battery terminals for corrosion — a poor connection causes voltage drop that can trigger EPS faults.

  3. Allow EPS to cool after heavy use.

Turning the steering wheel to full lock repeatedly during parking maneuvers generates significant heat in the EPS motor. The EPS warning may appear as a thermal protection response — the system reduces assistance to prevent damage. Switch off the engine and wait 10 minutes for the EPS motor to cool, then restart.

  4. Read the EPS fault code.

A Kia-compatible OBD-II scanner can read EPS fault codes — look for codes starting with C23XX or C24XX. Code C2310 indicates a torque sensor fault; C2400 indicates an EPS motor fault. These codes require replacement of the specific component at a Kia dealer or specialist workshop.

  5. Check for a Kia TSB or recall.

Kia has issued Technical Service Bulletins for EPS warnings on several Sportage and Seltos model years caused by EPS software calibration issues. Check your VIN at kia.com for applicable recalls or ask a Kia dealer to check for open TSBs. An EPS software update from a dealer may resolve persistent EPS warnings without hardware replacement.

When to Call a Professional

If the EPS warning persists after a restart and steering remains heavy, have the fault code read. EPS motor and control unit failures require replacement by a Kia-authorized workshop.
