ABS Warning Light

Land Rover Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Land Rover ABS warning means the anti-lock braking system has detected a fault. Normal braking works, but ABS, traction control, and stability control are disabled. Use a Land Rover-compatible scanner (SDD, iCarsoft LR, or Autel with JLR support) for an accurate diagnosis.

Affected Models

  • Range Rover (L405/L460)
  • Range Rover Sport
  • Range Rover Evoque
  • Land Rover Discovery
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport
  • Land Rover Defender (L663)

Common Causes

  • Wheel speed sensor failed — the most common cause on all Land Rover models
  • Wheel bearing worn — internal tone ring gives erratic readings
  • ABS/DSC hydraulic unit fault
  • Brake fluid level low
  • ABS wiring harness damage — common off-road where terrain debris impacts the underside

How to Fix It

  1. Read fault codes with a JLR-compatible scanner.

Use iCarsoft LR V3.0, Autel MaxiCOM with JLR coverage, or a Jaguar Land Rover SDD system. ABS and DSC codes are stored in the ABS/DSC module — common codes include those pointing to front or rear wheel speed sensors. Generic scanners often cannot access the ABS module data on Land Rover models.

  2. Inspect wheel speed sensors — especially after off-road use.

Land Rover wheel speed sensors can be damaged by mud, rocks, and debris during off-road use. After off-road driving, inspect each wheel arch area for mud-packed sensor connectors or damaged wiring. Clean the sensor tips and connector pins with electrical contact cleaner.

  3. Check the wheel bearings.

Land Rover wheel bearings — particularly the front bearings on Discovery 3/4 and Range Rover L322 — are a known wear item. A worn bearing causes the internal tone ring to produce erratic speed signals. Listen for a humming that changes with speed or when changing direction — this indicates a worn bearing.

  4. Check brake fluid level.

Confirm the brake fluid reservoir (under the hood or in the engine bay) is between MIN and MAX. Low brake fluid triggers ABS, DSC, and brake warnings simultaneously on Land Rover models. If the fluid is low, inspect for worn brake pads or a fluid leak.

  5. Have the DSC/ABS hydraulic unit tested.

The combined ABS and DSC hydraulic unit on Land Rover models is a high-quality Bosch or Continental unit that can develop internal faults over time. Multiple simultaneous ABS codes from different wheel positions suggest the control unit rather than individual sensors. Specialist auto electricians can test and rebuild the unit.

When to Call a Professional

Standard OBD-II scanners often miss Land Rover ABS fault codes. Use iCarsoft LR, Autel with JLR support, or a Jaguar Land Rover SDD system for accurate diagnosis.
