Oil Pressure Warning Light

Land Rover Vehicle

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

The red Land Rover oil pressure warning means engine oil pressure is critically low. Stop the engine immediately — Land Rover petrol and diesel engines, especially the AJ200 2.0 and 3.0 V6, require constant oil pressure for the variable valve timing and timing chain tensioner systems.

Affected Models

  • Range Rover (L405/L460)
  • Range Rover Sport
  • Range Rover Evoque
  • Land Rover Discovery
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport
  • Land Rover Defender (L663)

Common Causes

  • Oil level critically low — check the dipstick or instrument display first
  • Oil pressure sensor failed — a common fault on AJ200 and Ingenium engines
  • Oil leak from a gasket, seal, or oil cooler
  • Worn oil pump on high-mileage engines
  • Sludge from extended service intervals

How to Fix It

  1. Stop the engine immediately.

Pull over safely and turn off the engine as soon as the oil pressure warning appears. Land Rover's AJ200 petrol and Ingenium diesel engines use oil pressure for timing chain tensioner control — low pressure causes chain slack and potential jump timing. Do not restart.

  2. Check the oil level.

Most Land Rover models provide an oil level reading in the instrument cluster — press OK on the steering controls to access vehicle health. If the level is low, add the approved grade — typically 5W-30 for AJ200 petrol and 0W-30 for Ingenium diesel. Do not use a heavier grade than specified.

  3. Inspect for oil leaks.

Check under the vehicle for oil drips. Land Rover AJ200 2.0 petrol engines are known for oil leaks from the valve cover and cam cover area. Range Rover V8 (5.0 supercharged) models can leak from the supercharger oil feed lines. A burning oil smell indicates oil contacting hot exhaust components.

  4. Test the oil pressure sensor.

A false oil pressure reading from a failed sensor is common on Land Rover Ingenium and AJ200 engines. A Land Rover specialist with SDD can distinguish a genuine low pressure code from a sensor failure code. A mechanical pressure gauge fitted at the engine confirms actual pressure.

  5. Consider oil consumption on V8 supercharged models.

Range Rover 5.0 V8 supercharged engines consume oil — sometimes significantly. Check oil level every 3,000 km rather than waiting for the service interval. If consumption is high, a Jaguar Land Rover dealer can perform an oil consumption assessment under warranty.

When to Call a Professional

Land Rover engines are expensive to repair. If the oil level is correct and the warning persists, tow the vehicle — do not risk engine damage by driving.
