ABS Warning Light

Mazda Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

The Mazda ABS warning light means the anti-lock braking system has detected a fault. Normal braking works, but ABS will not prevent wheel lockup during emergency stops. The most common cause is a failed wheel speed sensor — an OBD-II scanner identifies which one.

Affected Models

  • Mazda CX-5
  • Mazda3
  • Mazda CX-30
  • Mazda CX-60
  • Mazda6
  • Mazda CX-3
  • Mazda MX-5 Miata

Common Causes

  • Wheel speed sensor failed or dirty — the most common cause on Mazda models
  • Tone ring on the wheel bearing cracked or corroded
  • ABS modulator unit fault
  • ABS fuse blown
  • Low brake fluid level causing combined ABS and brake warning lights

How to Fix It

  1. Read the ABS fault code.

Plug an OBD-II scanner into the port under the dashboard (driver's side). Mazda ABS codes appear as chassis C-codes — common codes include C1155, C1156, C1157, C1158 (individual wheel speed sensor faults). The code tells you which wheel's sensor has failed — front sensors are the most commonly replaced.

  2. Check if the DSC warning light is also on.

Mazda's DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and TCS (Traction Control System) share wheel speed sensors with the ABS — a failed sensor typically lights up all three warning lights simultaneously. If only the ABS light is on, the fault is ABS-specific. If all three lights are on, the wheel speed sensor is almost certainly the cause.

  3. Inspect the wheel speed sensors and wiring.

Mazda wheel speed sensors sit at each wheel hub and connect via a wiring harness that runs through the wheel arch. The harness is prone to chafing against the arch liner — inspect the routing from the sensor to the body connection point for worn-through insulation. Clean the sensor tip with brake cleaner if it is dirty or covered in brake dust — a dirty sensor can trigger a fault code without requiring replacement.

  4. Check the ABS fuse.

Open the engine bay fuse box and locate the ABS fuse — typically 30A. Replace a blown fuse with the same rating. A repeatedly blowing ABS fuse indicates a short circuit in the ABS wiring that requires professional diagnosis.

  5. Check brake fluid level.

Open the brake fluid reservoir under the hood and confirm the level is between MIN and MAX. Low brake fluid on Mazda models triggers both the ABS warning and the red brake warning light together. If the fluid is low, inspect the brakes for worn pads (which displace fluid from the reservoir) or a brake fluid leak before topping up.

When to Call a Professional

If the ABS light comes on together with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) warning light, the stability system is also disabled. Have the fault code read to confirm the specific failing component.
