ABS Warning Light
Mercedes-Benz Vehicle
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
The Mercedes-Benz ABS warning light means the anti-lock braking system has detected a fault and disabled itself. Regular braking still works, but ABS will not prevent wheel lockup during emergency braking. Get the fault code read with a Mercedes-compatible scanner (XENTRY or OBDeleven) for an accurate diagnosis.
Affected Models
- Mercedes C-Class
- Mercedes E-Class
- Mercedes GLC
- Mercedes GLE
- Mercedes A-Class
- Mercedes S-Class
- Mercedes CLA
Common Causes
- Wheel speed sensor failed or its wiring damaged — most common cause across all Mercedes models
- Reluctor ring on the wheel hub cracked or corroded from age
- ABS pump/module fault requiring rebuild or replacement
- Low brake fluid level triggering combined warning lights
- Corroded ABS sensor connector — common in high-mileage vehicles
How to Fix It
-
Read the ABS fault code with a compatible scanner.
Mercedes ABS faults require a scanner that reads chassis (C-prefix) codes or Mercedes-specific codes. Common codes: C1020 (left front speed sensor), C1022 (right front), C1024 (left rear), C1026 (right rear). The code tells you exactly which wheel sensor has failed — no need to guess.
-
Inspect the wheel speed sensor and wiring.
Remove the wheel and inspect the ABS sensor (a small black plug near the wheel hub) and its wiring harness. Look for corroded connectors, cracked wire insulation, or physical damage to the sensor tip. The wiring harness runs along the suspension arm and can chafe through from suspension movement over time.
-
Check the reluctor ring.
The reluctor ring (tone ring) is a toothed ring on the wheel bearing or hub that the ABS sensor reads. A cracked or corroded reluctor ring causes missed pulses, which the ABS module interprets as a sensor fault. Inspect the ring for missing teeth or rust damage — a badly corroded ring requires hub or bearing replacement.
-
Check brake fluid level.
Open the brake fluid reservoir (under the hood, near the firewall) and confirm it is between MIN and MAX. Mercedes vehicles often illuminate multiple warning lights simultaneously when brake fluid is low. If fluid is low, inspect for a brake fluid leak before topping up.
-
Have the ABS module tested.
If wheel speed sensor replacement does not clear the fault, the ABS hydraulic module or control unit may have failed. Mercedes ABS module failures are not uncommon on high-mileage C-Class and E-Class models. ABS modules can often be rebuilt or replaced with a tested used unit — a Mercedes specialist workshop can advise on options.
When to Call a Professional
If the ABS, ESP, and brake warning lights are all on simultaneously, the vehicle's stability and braking systems are all compromised. Have the vehicle inspected by a Mercedes-specialist workshop.
