AdBlue Warning / SCR System Warning

Mercedes-Benz Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Mercedes AdBlue warning means your diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank is running low. You will see a countdown of remaining range — when it reaches zero, the vehicle will not restart after the next engine-off. Refill AdBlue immediately at a petrol station or with a 10-litre jug from an auto parts store.

Affected Models

  • Mercedes E-Class (diesel)
  • Mercedes GLC (diesel)
  • Mercedes GLE (diesel)
  • Mercedes C-Class (diesel)
  • Mercedes Sprinter
  • Mercedes Vito

Common Causes

  • AdBlue tank depleted — normal consumption, typically 1 litre per 1000 km depending on driving style
  • AdBlue quality sensor fault — sensor falsely reports low or empty when the tank has fluid
  • Contaminated AdBlue — using the wrong fluid or water in the AdBlue tank
  • AdBlue pump or injector fault in the SCR system
  • SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system fault code stored

How to Fix It

  1. Refill AdBlue immediately.

The AdBlue filler cap is usually under the boot floor or near the fuel filler — it has a blue cap labeled AdBlue or DEF. Use only certified AdBlue fluid (ISO 22241 standard) — available at petrol stations, Mercedes dealers, and auto parts stores. Do not use tap water, windscreen wash, or any substitute — incorrect fluid damages the SCR catalyst.

  2. Add at least 4–5 litres to clear the warning.

The AdBlue tank on most Mercedes diesel models holds 13–24 litres depending on the model. Adding a full 10-litre jug ensures the tank is adequately filled and the warning light clears after a short drive. Do not overfill past the tank capacity — check your owner's manual for the tank size.

  3. Check if the vehicle has locked out from empty AdBlue.

If the AdBlue ran completely dry and the countdown reached zero, the Mercedes will not restart after the next engine switch-off. To restart: add at least 5 litres of AdBlue, then wait 10 minutes without starting the engine — the system recalibrates. Attempt to start — the engine should restart now that the minimum level has been replenished.

  4. Clear the AdBlue warning code after refilling.

On most Mercedes, the AdBlue warning clears automatically after adding fluid and driving a few kilometres. If the warning persists after adding a full tank, there may be a sensor fault — a scanner will show an AdBlue level sensor fault code. A Mercedes workshop can reset the SCR system after confirming the correct fluid level.

  5. Note the AdBlue consumption for your model.

Mercedes diesel engines consume approximately 1–1.5 litres of AdBlue per 1000 km, depending on driving style and load. For every fuel fill-up, check whether AdBlue needs topping up — many Mercedes service packages include AdBlue top-ups at each service. Keeping a 2-litre emergency jug in the boot prevents being stranded when the warning appears unexpectedly.

When to Call a Professional

If the AdBlue warning says 'SCR system fault' rather than just low fluid, the exhaust aftertreatment system itself has a fault. This requires diagnosis at a Mercedes workshop — refilling AdBlue alone will not resolve it.
