Battery Warning Light

Mitsubishi Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

The Mitsubishi battery warning light means the charging system is not maintaining adequate voltage. The most common causes are a failing alternator, a worn battery, or a loose battery terminal connection. If the warning appears while driving, the battery is draining — pull over within a few miles before electrical systems start failing.

Affected Models

  • Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
  • Mitsubishi ASX
  • Mitsubishi L200
  • Mitsubishi Pajero
  • Mitsubishi Galant
  • Mitsubishi Mirage

Common Causes

  • Alternator failure — not producing adequate charge while driving
  • Battery at end of life — typically 4–5 years
  • Loose or corroded battery terminal connection
  • Serpentine drive belt worn or broken — disconnects the alternator
  • Voltage regulator failure inside the alternator

How to Fix It

  1. Test voltage with the engine running.

Connect a multimeter to the battery terminals with the engine running. A healthy Mitsubishi charging system produces 13.5–14.8V. Voltage below 13.5V means the alternator is undercharging. Voltage below 12V means the battery is already heavily discharged — electrical system failure is imminent.

  2. Inspect battery terminals and connections.

Open the hood and look for white or blue corrosion on the battery terminals. Loosen, clean with a wire brush and baking soda solution, then retighten firmly. A corroded terminal causes voltage drop that triggers the battery warning even on a healthy battery and alternator.

  3. Check the drive belt.

The serpentine belt powers the alternator on Mitsubishi engines — if it breaks or slips severely, the alternator stops charging. Inspect the belt visually for cracks, fraying, or glazing. A broken belt will also disable the power steering and air conditioning simultaneously.

  4. Load-test the battery.

A battery can read 12V but still fail under the load of starting the engine — a load test measures true battery capacity. Most auto parts stores perform free battery and alternator tests. If the battery fails the load test, replace it with one matching Mitsubishi's specified CCA rating.

  5. Have the alternator output tested.

If the battery tests good but the warning persists, the alternator is faulty. Alternator output can be tested at most auto parts stores while the engine is running. Mitsubishi alternators can develop diode bridge or voltage regulator failures that reduce output before complete failure.

When to Call a Professional

If the battery warning appears with dimming headlights or the instrument cluster going dark, the alternator has failed. Pull over — the car may stall within minutes on battery power alone.
