Oil Pressure Warning Light

Mitsubishi Vehicle

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

The red Mitsubishi oil pressure warning light means engine oil pressure is dangerously low. Stop the engine immediately — driving even a short distance with low oil pressure can permanently damage Mitsubishi 4B11, 4J11, and 4D56 engines.

Affected Models

  • Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
  • Mitsubishi ASX
  • Mitsubishi L200
  • Mitsubishi Pajero
  • Mitsubishi Mirage
  • Mitsubishi Galant

Common Causes

  • Oil level critically low — check the dipstick first
  • Oil pressure sensor failed — common on higher-mileage Mitsubishi engines
  • Oil leak from gasket or seal
  • Worn oil pump
  • Oil sludge from extended oil change intervals

How to Fix It

  1. Stop the engine immediately.

Pull over safely and switch off the engine as soon as the red oil pressure warning appears. Do not restart and attempt to drive to a garage — even at idle, low oil pressure destroys bearings rapidly. Hazard lights on, engine off.

  2. Check the oil level.

Wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back to the sump, then check the dipstick. Confirm the level is between MIN and MAX. If low, top up with the correct grade — Mitsubishi engines typically specify 5W-30 or 0W-20 depending on the model and year; check the oil cap or owner's manual.

  3. Check for oil leaks.

Inspect under the vehicle for oil drips or puddles. Common Mitsubishi oil leak points include the valve cover gasket and the crankshaft front and rear seals. A burning oil smell inside the car often indicates oil dripping onto the exhaust system.

  4. Test the oil pressure sensor.

If the oil level is correct and there are no leaks, the oil pressure sending unit may have failed. A mechanic can connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge directly to the engine block to measure actual pressure. If pressure is normal at the gauge, replace only the sensor.

  5. Check oil change history.

Mitsubishi engines with infrequent oil changes develop sludge that blocks the oil pickup tube. Remove the oil filler cap and look inside — clean engines show a honey-gold film; sludged engines show black tar-like deposits. A professional engine flush and oil service can restore proper flow if caught before bearing damage.

When to Call a Professional

If the oil level is correct and the warning persists, do not drive the vehicle. Tow it to a workshop for an oil pressure gauge test.
