Camera Unavailable / Camera Blocked
Tesla Electric Vehicle
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Tesla 'Camera Unavailable' usually means a camera lens is dirty, fogged, or blocked — or the camera needs a few minutes to warm up from cold in below-freezing weather. Clean all camera lenses and reboot the touchscreen by holding both scroll wheel buttons for 10 seconds.
Affected Models
- Tesla Model 3
- Tesla Model Y
- Tesla Model S
- Tesla Model X
- Tesla Cybertruck
Common Causes
- Camera lens dirty, fogged, or covered with snow, ice, or mud
- Camera temperature too cold — cameras need warm-up time below freezing
- Touchscreen software glitch causing camera feed to not display
- Camera wiring connector loose from a recent service or impact
- Camera hardware failure requiring mobile service or service center replacement
How to Fix It
-
Clean all camera lenses.
Tesla vehicles have cameras on the front, rear, and B-pillars (sides). Use a clean microfibre cloth to wipe each camera lens — the small round or rectangular windows embedded in the body. Pay special attention to the B-pillar cameras (door edge near mirrors) and the front camera above the windshield — these are the most commonly obstructed.
-
Reboot the touchscreen.
Hold both scroll wheel buttons on the steering wheel simultaneously for 10–15 seconds until the touchscreen goes black and the Tesla logo appears. The reboot takes about 30 seconds — wait for the system to fully reload before checking camera status. A software glitch causing camera unavailable usually clears with this reboot.
-
Allow cameras to warm up in cold weather.
Below approximately 0°C (32°F), Tesla cameras need several minutes to warm up before they function. The car will display 'Camera Unavailable - Please Wait' during cold startup — this is normal. Precondition the vehicle via the Tesla app before driving in very cold weather to reduce warm-up time.
-
Check for ice or snow on the camera housings.
Ice forming over camera lenses and their heated surrounds is a common issue in snowy climates. Use the Tesla app to preheat the car before driving — the camera surrounds have heating elements that defrost the lenses. Gently clear ice from camera surrounds with a soft scraper — never use a hard ice scraper on the lens itself.
-
Check for a recent service or repair near camera wiring.
If camera issues started after a body shop repair, glass replacement, or Tesla service visit, a camera connector may have been disturbed. Schedule a Tesla mobile service appointment or visit a service center. Tesla mobile technicians can diagnose and replace individual cameras on-site for most models.
When to Call a Professional
If cameras consistently show unavailable after cleaning all lenses and rebooting, and the issue is not weather-related, contact Tesla service — camera replacements are covered under warranty on vehicles under 4 years old.
