Service is Required Soon

Tesla Electric Vehicle

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Tesla shows 'Service is required soon' when the car has identified a maintenance item — typically a brake fluid test, an A/C desiccant change, or a high-voltage coolant flush — that is approaching its recommended interval.
The car is fully drivable.
The alert is informational and is meant to give you weeks of notice rather than alerting you to immediate damage.

Affected Models

  • Tesla Model 3
  • Tesla Model Y
  • Tesla Model S
  • Tesla Model X

Common Causes

  • Brake fluid test interval reached (about every 2 years)
  • A/C desiccant bag service interval reached (4-6 years on most models)
  • Cabin air filter due (about every 2 years)
  • Software flagged a wear item from real driving data
  • 12V auxiliary battery age and health flag (lithium AUX in newer cars)

How to Fix It

  1. Tap the alert for details.

On the touchscreen, tap the alert banner.
The follow-up screen names the specific item — for example 'Brake Fluid Test Recommended' or 'Cabin Air Filter Due'.
Without that detail, you cannot plan the right action.

  2. Check the schedule in the app.

Open the Tesla app, go to Service.
The app lists upcoming and overdue items the car has flagged.
Tap the item to see what is involved and roughly how long it takes.

  3. Schedule via the app.

From the Service screen, tap Schedule Service.
Pick mobile service if the item supports it (cabin filter, 12V battery, brake fluid test).
Pick a service centre for items that need a lift or HV system access (coolant work).

  4. DIY the simple items.

Cabin air filters on Model 3 and Y are a 15-minute DIY job — filters are 20-40 USD.
    Wiper blades are similar.
The alert clears once the car detects the new part or after manual reset in service mode.

  5. Defer non-urgent items if needed.

If the car simply says 'recommended', you have weeks to schedule.
If the wording escalates to 'service required' without 'soon', the item has slipped past its planned date and should be addressed.

  6. Reset after work is complete.

Mobile service or a service centre clears the alert at the end of the appointment.
For DIY, the indicator typically clears on its own after the car logs the new part — give it a drive cycle.
Do not panic if it lingers a day or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be stranded if I ignore this?

Almost never.
'Service is required soon' is a planning notice, not a stop-driving warning.
The car will escalate to a stronger message — 'Service required' or a specific subsystem alert — if a real fault develops.
Plan, do not panic.

Is service free under warranty?

Maintenance items like cabin filter and brake fluid test are routine service and not free.
Items the car flags as faulty under warranty are covered.
The Service screen labels each line so you know in advance what is included.
