ABS Warning Light
Volvo Vehicle
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Volvo ABS warning light means the anti-lock braking system has detected a fault. Normal braking still works, but ABS is disabled. Use a Volvo-compatible scanner (VIDA or OBDeleven with Volvo support) to read the specific fault code — standard OBD-II tools often miss Volvo ABS codes.
Affected Models
- Volvo XC60
- Volvo XC90
- Volvo S60
- Volvo V60
- Volvo XC40
- Volvo V90
- Volvo S90
Common Causes
- Wheel speed sensor failed — most common cause across all Volvo models
- Wheel bearing worn — internal tone ring gives erratic signals
- ABS/DSTC hydraulic control unit fault
- ABS fuse blown
- Low brake fluid triggering combined warnings
How to Fix It
-
Read fault codes with a Volvo-compatible scanner.
Use VIDA, OBDeleven with Volvo support, or a professional scanner with Volvo coverage. Volvo ABS codes are read from the ABS/DSTC control module. Common codes: CEM-0027 (wheel speed sensor), SRS-0008, ABS-000E. A standard OBD-II scanner often shows no codes or only a generic communication error for Volvo ABS faults.
-
Check if the DSTC warning is also on.
Volvo's DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) shares wheel speed sensors with ABS. If both ABS and DSTC lights are on together, a wheel speed sensor fault is almost certainly the cause. A single sensor replacement often clears both warnings.
-
Inspect wheel speed sensors and wiring.
Volvo wheel speed sensors sit at each wheel hub — the wiring harness routes through the wheel arch and is prone to chafing. Inspect the harness from the sensor to its body clip — look for worn-through insulation or a broken wire. Front sensor harness damage is more common due to suspension movement.
-
Check the wheel bearings.
Volvo wheel bearings incorporate the ABS tone ring — a worn bearing causes the tone ring to wobble, producing erratic signals. Listen for a hum or rumble that changes with vehicle speed or when cornering. A humming wheel bearing requires replacement — the ABS fault will clear automatically.
-
Check the ABS/DSTC hydraulic unit.
The Volvo ABS and DSTC hydraulic unit (usually a Bosch ESP unit) can develop internal pump or solenoid faults. Multiple simultaneous sensor codes from different wheels suggest the hydraulic unit rather than individual sensors. Specialist auto electricians can often test and rebuild the hydraulic unit at lower cost than OEM replacement.
When to Call a Professional
If the ABS and DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) warning lights are both on, all stability systems are disabled. Read the fault codes before replacing components.
