GPS Lost
Humminbird Fishfinder
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
'GPS Lost' means the Humminbird no longer has a GPS fix.
Without GPS, you lose position, speed, and waypoint navigation.
Check that you have clear sky view, wait 2-3 minutes for re-acquisition.
If you can't get a fix in open water, the antenna or cable has a problem.
Most reception issues clear when obstructions are removed.
Affected Models
- Humminbird Helix 5/7/9/10/12
- Humminbird Solix
- Humminbird Apex
- Humminbird Mega Live
- Humminbird Mega 360
Common Causes
- GPS antenna covered or blocked
- External antenna cable damaged
- Internal antenna failed (older Helix units)
- Heavy weather affecting reception briefly
- Bad almanac after long power-off (cold start needed)
How to Fix It
-
Move to clear sky view.
Get out from under hardtops, bridges, or tall structures.
Open water with clear sky overhead is ideal.
Wait 2-3 minutes — GPS needs time to re-acquire after losing fix.
Most fix issues resolve once obstructions clear. -
Check the GPS antenna.
If using an external antenna (small puck mounted on the boat's roof or arch), confirm nothing is covering it.
Salt buildup, a flag, or loose canvas can block reception.
Wipe the antenna clean with a soft cloth.
Ensure clear line-of-sight to the sky. -
Inspect the antenna cable.
Trace the cable from antenna to the unit.
Look for kinks, sharp bends, chafe damage, or visible breaks.
Coaxial GPS cables are sensitive to mechanical stress and break inside the insulation without visible outside damage.
Replace damaged cables (40-100 USD). -
Power-cycle the unit.
Hold the power button until the unit shuts off.
Wait 30 seconds.
Power back on.
This forces fresh GPS acquisition.
If the unit acquires within 5 minutes of power-on with clear sky view, the issue was transient. -
Check the antenna setup.
On Humminbird Helix, open Menu → Setup → GPS Source.
If using internal GPS, confirm it's selected.
If using external (which is more accurate), confirm the external option is selected.
Some older Helix units only have internal GPS — newer ones support both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Humminbird take longer to acquire than my phone?
Phones use Assisted GPS (A-GPS) which uses cellular data to download almanac quickly.
Marine GPS receivers download almanac directly from satellites — that takes 30 seconds to several minutes for a cold start.
This is normal — give your Humminbird time to acquire on the first launch.
Will the Humminbird still show sonar without GPS?
Yes — sonar is independent of GPS.
You'll see depth, bottom contour, and fish marks normally.
What you lose: charts (no position to plot on), waypoints (no current position to mark), and speed (no GPS to derive speed from).
