Map Card Error

Humminbird Fishfinder

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Map Card Error' means the chart card (LakeMaster, AutoChart Live, or Navionics) can't be read.
Power off, remove the card, inspect contacts, reinsert.
Most map card errors clear after reseating.
If the card is corrupted, you may need to reformat (loses data) or replace.
Always power off before removing or inserting cards.

Affected Models

  • Humminbird Helix 5/7/9/10/12
  • Humminbird Solix
  • Humminbird Apex

Common Causes

  • Card removed while unit was on (corruption)
  • Card not fully seated in the slot
  • Card slot contacts dirty
  • Card lock switch enabled (read-only)
  • Card itself failed

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the unit.

Hot-removing or inserting cards causes most corruption.
    Always power off first.
Hold the power button until the unit shuts down.
Wait 10 seconds before opening the card slot.

  2. Open the card slot.

Find the card slot — usually a small door on the side of the Humminbird.
    Open carefully.
The card should be present and seated flush with the slot.
If loose or partially out, reseat firmly until you feel it click.

  3. Check the card lock switch.

On the SD card, there's a small slider (lock) on the side.
If in the LOCKED position, the card is read-only and the unit may show errors.
    Slide to UNLOCKED.
    Reinsert into the unit.

  4. Try the card in a computer.

Insert the card into a computer with an SD adapter.
If the computer can't read it, the card is corrupted.
If the computer reads it fine, the unit's card slot may be the issue — try the card in a known-good slot if you have multiple Humminbird units.

  5. Replace if corrupted.

If the card is corrupted and you can't recover the data, replacement is the only option.
LakeMaster and Navionics cards are 100-200 USD typical.
Use class 10 cards from major brands (SanDisk, Samsung) for best reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any SD card?

For map data: only authorized chart cards (LakeMaster, AutoChart, Navionics).
For waypoints, screenshots, and AutoChart Live recording: standard SD cards work — class 10, FAT32 format.
Don't try to put unofficial chart data on a card; it won't work.

Does removing the card while powered always corrupt it?

Most of the time, yes.
The unit may be writing to the card at any moment (logging GPS track, updating chart cache).
Pulling the card mid-write corrupts the file system.
Always power off first — takes 10 seconds and saves you from a corrupted card.
