No Sonar Found

Humminbird Fishfinder

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

'No Sonar Found' means the Humminbird can't communicate with the transducer.
Either the cable is loose, corroded, or the transducer has failed.
Power off, inspect the transducer cable connector at the back of the unit, and reseat firmly.
Most events fix at the connector.
If reseating doesn't work, check the cable for damage along its run.

Affected Models

  • Humminbird Helix 5/7/9/10/12
  • Humminbird Solix
  • Humminbird Apex
  • Humminbird Mega Live
  • Humminbird Mega 360

Common Causes

  • Transducer cable connector loose at the unit
  • Connector pins corroded
  • Cable damaged where it routes through the boat
  • Transducer itself failed
  • Wrong sonar source selected in setup

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the unit.

Hold the power button until the Humminbird shuts off.
Don't work on cables while live.
Wait 30 seconds before disconnecting anything.

  2. Inspect the transducer connector.

Find the cable from the transducer plugged into the back of the unit.
Unscrew or unlock the connector and pull out.
Look at the pins — should be clean and straight.
Green or white powder is corrosion.
    Bent pins are a problem.

  3. Clean corroded pins.

Light corrosion: clean with a small wire brush.
Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease before reconnecting.
Don't pack the connector — just a thin coating protects against future corrosion.
Heavy corrosion may need professional cleaning or connector replacement.

  4. Reseat firmly and power on.

Plug the connector back in until it seats fully.
Tighten any locking ring by hand.
Power on the unit and wait 30 seconds for sonar to initialize.
Watch the screen — does the sonar display return?

  5. Check sonar source setup.

On Humminbird, multiple sonar sources can be configured (CHIRP, MEGA, side-imaging, down-imaging).
If the setup points to a sonar source that isn't connected (e.g., MEGA Live not installed), you may see No Sonar Found.
Verify the sonar source matches your installed transducer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will GPS still work without sonar?

Yes — GPS, charts, and waypoint navigation work independently of sonar.
You lose depth, bottom contour, and fish detection.
For day fishing this is workable for navigation purposes; for fishing itself you really need sonar working.

How long do Humminbird transducers last?

5-10 years with proper care.
Saltwater shortens life; freshwater extends.
Hitting bottom or floating debris is the most common failure cause.
Inspect the transducer annually — minor scratches are fine, deep cracks or missing material means replacement (200-500 USD parts plus install).
