GPS No Fix
Lowrance Chartplotter
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
'GPS No Fix' on a Lowrance HDS means the unit has no current position from GPS satellites.
Without a fix, you lose position display, speed, and waypoint navigation.
Check that you have clear sky view, wait 2-3 minutes for re-acquisition.
If the unit can't get a fix in open water, the antenna or cable has a problem.
Most reception issues clear once you're away from obstructions.
Affected Models
- Lowrance HDS Live
- Lowrance HDS Carbon
- Lowrance Elite FS
- Lowrance HOOK Reveal
- Lowrance HDS Pro
Common Causes
- GPS antenna covered or blocked by hardtop or T-top
- External antenna cable damaged
- Internal antenna failed (older units without external)
- Heavy weather affecting reception briefly
- Bad almanac data after long power-off requiring cold start
How to Fix It
-
Move to clear sky view.
Get out from under any hardtop, bridge, or tall structures.
Open water with clear sky overhead is ideal.
Wait 2-3 minutes — GPS needs time to re-acquire after losing fix.
Most fix issues resolve once obstructions are cleared. -
Check the GPS antenna.
If using an external antenna (puck on the boat's roof), confirm nothing is covering it.
A flag, loose canvas, or thick salt buildup can block reception.
Wipe the antenna clean and ensure clear line-of-sight to the sky. -
Inspect the antenna cable.
Trace the cable from antenna back to the chartplotter.
Look for kinks, sharp bends, chafe damage, or visible breaks.
Coaxial cables can break inside the insulation under stress.
If you find damage, the cable needs replacement (40-100 USD parts). -
Power-cycle the unit.
Hold the power button until the unit shuts off.
Wait 30 seconds.
Power back on.
This forces a fresh GPS acquisition.
If the unit acquires within 5 minutes of power-on with clear sky view, you're back to normal. -
Check NMEA 2000 GPS source if used.
Some HDS units rely on a GPS source over NMEA 2000 (the boat's network).
If your boat has a separate GPS antenna feeding the network, check that source is online.
Open Network → Sources → GPS to confirm.
Loss of NMEA 2000 GPS shows as GPS No Fix even though the chartplotter's own antenna might be fine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my unit lose GPS in heavy rain?
Heavy precipitation does cause minor GPS attenuation, but not enough to fully lose fix in normal conditions.
If your unit loses fix in rain, the antenna or cable has marginal signal that the rain pushes over the edge.
Diagnose the underlying weakness — clear-weather GPS will improve too.
How long does cold-start GPS acquisition take?
5-10 minutes for a unit that's been off for weeks or months — the receiver needs to download fresh almanac data from satellites.
Warm starts (off for hours): under 1 minute.
Hot starts (off for minutes): seconds.
This is normal — be patient on the first power-up of the season.
