Network Error
Lowrance Chartplotter
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Network Error' on Lowrance HDS refers to the Ethernet network that connects multiple HDS displays and accessories like radar.
Either the Ethernet cable has come loose, the network switch has failed, or one of the connected devices is causing the issue.
Check Ethernet cables at each connection point.
Most Network Error events are loose Ethernet cables — reseat firmly and the issue clears.
Affected Models
- Lowrance HDS Live
- Lowrance HDS Carbon
- Lowrance HDS Pro
Common Causes
- Ethernet cable disconnected or partially seated
- Cable damaged where it routes through the boat
- Network switch (Ethernet hub) failed
- One device on network failing and disrupting traffic
- Ethernet port damaged on a unit
How to Fix It
-
Power off the chartplotter.
Power down the HDS unit.
Network errors can be live-debugged in some cases, but with HDS the safer approach is power-cycling all networked units to start fresh. -
Inspect the Ethernet cable at the chartplotter.
Find the Ethernet cable plugged into the back of the HDS.
Should be firmly seated with the latch engaged.
Unplug and reseat — make sure you hear the latch click.
If the cable connector is damaged (broken latch), replacement is needed. -
Check the Ethernet switch (hub).
If you have multiple HDS units, they connect through a Lowrance Ethernet switch (NEP).
Power off the switch for 30 seconds, power back on.
Check that all status LEDs come on.
If a port LED is dark while a cable is plugged in, that port has failed. -
Check cables along the run.
Walk each Ethernet cable from one device to the next.
Look for kinks, damage, or pinched sections.
Boat Ethernet cables run through tight spaces and can develop issues.
Replace any visibly damaged cables (15-30 USD each). -
Power-cycle all networked units.
Power off all HDS units, the Ethernet switch, and any connected accessories (radar, etc.).
Wait 60 seconds.
Power up the Ethernet switch first.
Then power up each HDS unit one at a time, waiting 30 seconds between.
This rebuilds the network from scratch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my chartplotter work standalone with Network Error?
Yes — single HDS units function fully without the Ethernet network.
You lose chart sharing between displays, radar overlay, and live sonar sharing.
For day-to-day single-display use, it's workable.
For multi-display setups, you really want the network healthy before relying on it.
Can I use generic Ethernet cables?
Lowrance-branded cables are recommended for marine use — they have proper waterproof connectors and shielding.
Generic Cat5e/Cat6 cables work electrically but the connectors are vulnerable to corrosion in marine environments.
For permanent installs, use Lowrance cables.
For temporary diagnostics, generic cables are fine.
