CLEAN ME!
Breville Espresso Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Breville shows 'CLEAN ME!' after about 200 shots of espresso.
It is a maintenance reminder — not a fault.
The cleaning cycle uses a Breville cleaning tablet to flush coffee oils from the group head and the three-way valve.
Skipping it does not damage the machine immediately, but builds up oils that will eventually affect taste and pressure.
Affected Models
- Breville Barista Express
- Breville Barista Pro
- Breville Barista Touch
- Breville Barista Touch Impress
- Breville Oracle
- Breville Dual Boiler
Common Causes
- Shot counter reached 200 (the typical Breville interval)
- Cleaning never run since unboxing
- Counter never reset after the previous cleaning
How to Fix It
-
Get a Breville cleaning tablet.
Genuine Breville tablets come with most machines and refills are 10-20 USD for a 8-pack.
Generic descaling tablets are not the same — Breville cleaning tablets are designed to dissolve coffee oils, not limescale. -
Insert the cleaning disc.
Take the rubber cleaning disc that came with the machine.
Drop one tablet into the disc.
Place the disc in the single basket of the portafilter.
Lock the portafilter into the group head as if you were brewing. -
Empty the drip tray and tank-up water.
The cleaning cycle pumps significant water.
Empty the drip tray first.
Fill the water tank to MAX.
Place a 1-litre vessel under the group head if the drip tray is small. -
Start the cleaning cycle.
On Barista Express: hold POWER + 1-CUP + 2-CUP buttons together for 5 seconds.
On Barista Pro/Touch: Menu → Cleaning Cycle.
The machine pulses water through the disc for several minutes.
Do not interrupt. -
Rinse after the cycle.
Once the cycle ends, remove the portafilter.
Rinse the disc and basket thoroughly.
Run a 30-second water flush through the empty group head to clear any tablet residue. -
Wipe the group head.
With a clean damp cloth, wipe the underside of the group head and the gasket area.
Coffee oils accumulate here.
Regular wiping extends the gasket life and improves flavour. -
Counter resets automatically.
The shot counter resets to zero when the cleaning cycle completes.
The CLEAN ME! prompt clears.
The next prompt arrives after about 200 more shots — typically 6-8 weeks for a daily two-cup household.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Cleaning and Descaling?
Cleaning removes coffee oils from the group head and three-way valve.
Descaling removes mineral scale from the boiler and water lines.
Both are needed but on different schedules — cleaning every 200 shots, descaling every 1-3 months depending on water hardness.
