E01

Breville Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E01 is the thermocoil's overheat protection.
Either the heating element ran too hot, or the temperature sensor is reading abnormally because of scale buildup.
Power off for 30 minutes to cool fully.
Then run a descaling cycle.
About 80% of E01 cases clear after descaling, because the most common cause is scale insulating the temperature sensor.

Affected Models

  • Breville Bambino Plus
  • Breville Barista Express
  • Breville Barista Touch
  • Breville Oracle
  • Breville Dual Boiler

Common Causes

  • Limescale insulating the thermocoil temperature sensor
  • Thermocoil heating element failing
  • Temperature sensor (NTC) drifted out of spec
  • Water flow blocked — heater works but no water carries the heat away
  • Power supply variation triggering thermal protection

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and unplug for 30 minutes.

The thermocoil needs to cool fully before any of the protection circuits will reset.
Don't rush this — even after the machine feels cool, the internal element retains heat.
30 minutes is the minimum; an hour is better if you can wait.

  2. Plug in and try a brew.

After cooling, plug back in and try a single shot.
If E01 doesn't return and the machine brews normally, you're done — the issue was a one-time overheat event.

  3. Run a descaling cycle if E01 returns.

Use Breville's descaler or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water (Breville's manual lists this as acceptable).
Run a full cycle — typically 15–20 minutes.
Scale on the temperature sensor is the leading cause of recurring E01.

  4. Check water tank seating.

Pull the tank, refill, push back in firmly.
If the tank isn't seated, water doesn't reach the pump and the heater can run dry — triggers E01 quickly.
Tank seating issues are easy to miss because the machine still looks normal otherwise.

  5. Contact Breville support if E01 persists.

Have the model and serial number ready (under the drip tray on most models).
If the machine is under warranty, repair is free.
Breville's 2-year warranty covers thermocoil failures specifically — make sure to mention E01 in the conversation.

When to Call a Professional

If E01 persists after a 30-minute cool-down and a full descale, contact Breville support.
Thermocoil replacement is a service repair — Breville's 2-year warranty covers it.
Out of warranty, expect $150–300 in service costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Breville Bambino models seem to get E01 more than others?

The Bambino has a smaller, faster-heating thermocoil designed for quick warm-ups.
That speed comes with less margin — small amounts of scale affect it more than the larger thermocoils in the Barista Express or Oracle.
Bambino owners should descale more frequently, every 4–6 weeks in hard water areas.

Can I use vinegar instead of Breville's descaler?

Yes for occasional cleaning — Breville's manual specifically says white vinegar mixed 50/50 with water is acceptable.
For routine maintenance, the proper Breville descaler is gentler on the thermocoil's internal coatings.
Vinegar works in a pinch but isn't ideal long-term.
