E02
Breville Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E02 means the pump isn't building proper espresso pressure — usually 9 bar at the puck.
Most cases come down to the pump being air-locked, the portafilter being packed too tight, or scale narrowing the water path.
Run hot water through the steam wand to prime the pump, ease the tamp pressure, and try again.
Affected Models
- Breville Bambino Plus
- Breville Barista Express
- Breville Barista Touch
- Breville Oracle
- Breville Dual Boiler
Common Causes
- Air locked in the pump after a tank refill (most common)
- Coffee tamped too hard — water can't flow through the puck
- Scale buildup restricting water flow
- Grind too fine for the portafilter — flow chokes off
- Pump itself wearing out (after years of heavy use)
How to Fix It
-
Run hot water through the steam wand.
Open the steam wand and run hot water for 15–20 seconds.
This primes the pump by pulling fresh water through the system.
If air was the issue, E02 clears immediately after the prime. -
Check your tamp pressure.
Espresso tamping should feel firm but not crushing — about 30 lb of pressure.
If you've been pressing extra hard 'for a better shot,' you may be over-compacting and choking the flow.
Ease up and try again with a lighter tamp. -
Adjust the grind coarser.
If your grinder's been getting finer (perhaps for ristrettos), try a couple of clicks coarser.
Too-fine grind blocks water flow → no pressure → E02.
The shot should pour in 25–30 seconds; if it's slower, you're too fine. -
Run a descaling cycle if E02 persists.
Use Breville's descaler.
Scale narrows the internal water passages, dropping the pump's effective pressure.
A full descale cycle restores normal flow and clears most recurring E02. -
Check the portafilter and puck.
After E02, look at the portafilter.
If the puck is dry on top and barely wet underneath, water didn't penetrate — confirms a pressure or flow issue.
If the puck is soaked through, pressure was building but cut out late — different issue, possibly the OPV valve.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between E01 and E02?
E01 is the thermocoil — temperature problem.
E02 is the pump — pressure problem.
Both stop the machine, but the cause and fix are different.
E01 needs cooling and descaling.
E02 needs priming or grind adjustment.
How long do Breville pumps last?
5,000–10,000 brews under normal use.
That's 3–7 years for typical home users.
Pumps gradually lose pressure as they age — you'll notice shots getting weaker before E02 appears.
If E02 starts appearing on a 5+ year old machine, the pump is the most likely cause.
