A01
DeLonghi Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A01 is DeLonghi's general fault alarm — the machine has detected something it doesn't like and stopped to protect itself.
Most cases trace to scale buildup, a sensor that needs cleaning, or the machine being off-position.
Power cycle first.
If A01 returns, run a descaling cycle.
If it still returns, the machine needs service.
Affected Models
- DeLonghi Magnifica S
- DeLonghi Dinamica
- DeLonghi Eletta
- DeLonghi PrimaDonna
- DeLonghi La Specialista
Common Causes
- Heavy scale buildup affecting the boiler temperature sensor
- Brew unit out of position or stuck mid-cycle
- Water circuit air-locked after maintenance
- Internal sensor reading out of range
- Power-supply hiccup during operation
How to Fix It
-
Switch the machine off.
Use the power button on the front, not just the standby.
Wait 10 seconds.
Power back on.
Most A01 events from a transient sensor read clear after this single step. -
Check the brew unit position.
Open the side panel and check the brew unit.
If it's clearly out of position (handle not at home), gently work it back to home.
An out-of-position brew unit triggers A01 reliably.
Put it back at home position and reseat firmly. -
Run a descaling cycle.
Settings > Descaling > Start.
Use DeLonghi's descaler (EcoDecalk).
The cycle runs 25–30 minutes and uses two tank-fulls of water.
Heavy scale buildup is the leading cause of recurring A01. -
Run a clean cycle.
Use a DeLonghi cleaning tablet via the cleaning cycle.
This pushes hot water and cleaner through the brew unit and milk system.
Removes coffee oils that build up and affect the brew unit's mechanical operation. -
Book service if A01 persists.
Persistent A01 after descaling and cleaning indicates a hardware issue.
Common service items: thermistor replacement, brew unit motor, water flow sensor.
Your DeLonghi warranty covers these in the first 2 years.
When to Call a Professional
If A01 persists after a power-cycle and a full descaling, the machine needs service.
DeLonghi authorised service handles boiler thermistor replacement and brew-unit motor repairs that can cause persistent A01.
Most repairs run €100–250 depending on the part.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is A01 the same as A03?
Different.
A01 is the general fault.
A03 specifically means descaling required.
If both appear, descale first — that often clears A01 too because heavy scale is the most common A01 cause.
How often should I descale a DeLonghi?
Depends on water hardness and use.
Hard water area, daily use: every 4–6 weeks.
Soft water or lighter use: every 2–3 months.
Use the DeLonghi water hardness test strip that came with the machine to set the right reminder interval — saves you from descaling too often or not enough.
