Empty Grounds Container

Jura Coffee Machine

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

The grounds drawer is full and the machine won't brew until you empty it.
Slide the drawer out, tip the grounds in the bin, rinse the drawer, dry it, and slide it back in.
The crucial part: the machine needs to detect the drawer being removed for at least 5 seconds before it'll clear the message.
Slide it out fully, count to 5, then slide it back.

Affected Models

  • Jura E8
  • Jura ENA 8
  • Jura S8
  • Jura Z10
  • Jura Giga 6

Common Causes

  • Grounds drawer genuinely full (most common)
  • Drawer emptied but slid back in too quickly — machine didn't register the removal
  • Drip tray sensor wet, machine confused about drawer state
  • Drawer not seated fully — sensor doesn't engage
  • Sensor on the drawer rail dirty or sticky

How to Fix It

  1. Slide the grounds drawer fully out.

Pull it out completely — don't just crack it open.
The machine has a sensor that only registers when the drawer is fully removed.
    A half-out drawer doesn't reset the count.

  2. Empty and rinse it.

Tip the grounds in the bin or compost.
Rinse the drawer with water — coffee oils build up over time and start to smell.
Dry the outside completely before reinserting; a wet drawer can confuse the drip tray sensor.

  3. Wait 5 seconds before sliding it back.

This is the step most people miss.
Jura's sensor needs the drawer to be physically out for at least 5 seconds before it'll register the empty cycle.
Pull, count to 5, then push back in firmly.

  4. Confirm the drawer is fully seated.

The drawer should sit flush with the machine's body.
If it sticks out even slightly, the sensor doesn't engage and the message stays.
Push it in firmly until it stops.

  5. Clean the drawer rail if the message persists.

If you've emptied properly and the message still shows, coffee residue may be sticking the sensor.
Wipe the rail inside the machine where the drawer slides — use a damp cloth, then dry it.
    Reseat the drawer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Jura grounds drawer need emptying?

Most home Jura models hold 8–12 espresso pucks in the grounds drawer.
That's roughly 8–12 cups before the message appears.
For a daily user pulling 4 cups a day, you'll empty it every 2–3 days.
Heavier users empty daily.

Why doesn't the count reset after I empty it?

The grounds drawer count resets only when the machine detects the drawer being out for several seconds.
If you empty quickly and slide back in, the sensor may not register the removal at all — the count keeps climbing.
Always pause for at least 5 seconds out before reinserting.
