Insert Brew Unit

Jura Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The brew unit isn't seated correctly, or the machine can't sense it.
Open the side panel, take the brew unit out, give it a quick rinse, and put it back firmly.
Listen for the click — if it doesn't click, it's not in correctly.
Most cases clear with a proper reinsert.

Affected Models

  • Jura E8
  • Jura ENA 8
  • Jura S8
  • Jura Z10
  • Jura Giga 6

Common Causes

  • Brew unit not pushed in fully — needs a firm click
  • Brew unit removed for cleaning and not yet returned
  • Brew unit jammed in the wrong position from the previous cycle
  • Sensor on the brew unit housing dirty
  • Brew unit returned upside-down or backwards

How to Fix It

  1. Open the side door.

On most Jura models, the brew unit sits behind a side door on the right.
Open it and you'll see the brew unit with a small handle.
Turn off the machine first — never remove the brew unit while it's running.

  2. Check the brew unit position.

The handle should be in the home position — usually pointing down or aligned with the housing.
If it's at an odd angle, the previous cycle ended mid-action.
Press the small button on the unit (if your model has one) and gently work the handle to home position.

  3. Take it out and inspect.

Press the release button and pull the brew unit out by its handle.
Look at the connection points — they should be clean.
Coffee residue around the rubber seal is normal; rinse it off under running water.

  4. Rinse and dry.

Run lukewarm water through the brew unit until the water runs clear.
Don't use soap — coffee residue washes off with water alone, and soap can affect the next brew's taste.
Dry the outside with a cloth before reinserting.

  5. Push it back firmly until it clicks.

Insert the brew unit, line up the handle, and push.
You should hear and feel a click as it locks into place.
If it doesn't click, it's not seated.
Don't force it — pull out, check orientation, and try again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the Jura brew unit?

Rinse weekly with daily use, or every 50–80 brews.
Jura also has an automatic 'Clean' cycle that runs cleaning tablets through the brew unit — recommended monthly.
The 'Clean' cycle uses a Jura cleaning tablet and a full water tank — runs about 20 minutes.

Can I run my Jura without the brew unit?

No — the brew unit is essential.
It's the part that compresses the coffee grounds and forces water through them.
Without it, the machine refuses to brew and shows 'Insert Brew Unit'.
If you want hot water for tea, you can use the steam wand for that — but coffee requires the brew unit.
