Add Water
Philips Saeco Coffee Machine
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Most cases: tank is empty, refill it.
If the tank is clearly full and the message still shows, the float inside the tank is stuck or the contacts are dirty.
Lift the tank, shake gently to free the float, wipe the contacts on the bottom, and reseat firmly.
Affected Models
- Saeco Xelsis
- Saeco PicoBaristo
- Saeco Incanto
- Saeco GranBaristo
- Saeco HD8927
Common Causes
- Tank actually empty (most common)
- Float inside the tank stuck on its rod (limescale buildup)
- Contacts under the tank dirty or wet
- Tank not seated fully on the machine
- Tank-presence sensor on the machine itself failed (rare)
How to Fix It
-
Confirm the tank actually has water.
Lift the tank out and look at the level inside.
Refill to the MAX line if low.
Use cold tap water; some models accept filtered water but not distilled (Saeco machines need some mineral content). -
Check the float inside the tank.
Look at the bottom of the tank.
There's a small float that rises with the water.
If it's stuck at the bottom, the message stays even with a full tank.
Shake the tank gently or tap it on a folded towel to free the float. -
Clean the contacts under the tank.
Two metal contacts under the tank tell the machine when it's in place.
Wipe them with a dry cloth.
If you've had spills, dry them thoroughly before reinserting — moisture bridging the contacts confuses the sensor. -
Wipe the matching contacts on the machine.
Look at the spot on the machine where the tank sits.
Wipe the contacts there too with a dry cloth.
Coffee residue or water can collect here over time. -
Reseat the tank firmly.
Push the tank down until it sits flush.
Gently rock side-to-side to confirm seating.
The message should clear within a couple of seconds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the float get stuck?
Limescale builds up around the float over time, especially in hard water areas.
The buildup makes the float stick to its guide rod.
Regular descaling using Saeco's descaler or a 50/50 vinegar mix prevents this.
You can also remove the float on most Saeco tanks for direct cleaning.
How often should I refill the tank?
Saeco tanks hold 1.5–1.7 litres for most models.
That's enough for 15–20 cappuccinos or 25–30 espressos.
Daily users refill every 2–3 days; lighter users every 4–7 days.
Always refill before the tank fully empties — running dry pulls air into the pump.
