Descaling Alert

Philips Saeco Coffee Machine

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

The descaling alert means scale has built up to a level that requires a full descale cycle. Use Philips descaler liquid (CA6700) and the built-in descale programme. The process takes around 30 minutes.

Affected Models

  • Philips 2200 Series
  • Philips 3200 Series
  • Philips 4300 Series
  • Philips 5400 Series
  • Saeco GranBaristo
  • Saeco Xelsis
  • Saeco Minuto

Common Causes

  • Scale buildup in the boiler and water circuit from hard water
  • AquaClean filter expired or not installed, allowing more scale to form
  • High local water hardness accelerating mineral deposit buildup

How to Fix It

  1. Purchase Philips descaler liquid.

Use Philips CA6700 liquid descaler or an equivalent citric-acid-based descaler. Avoid vinegar — it can leave residual taste and may damage internal rubber seals.

  2. Prepare the machine.

Empty the drip tray and water tank. Mix the descaler with water in the tank as directed on the product (typically one sachet or bottle cap into a full tank). Place a container of at least 1.5 litres under the spout.

  3. Start the descale programme.

Navigate to Maintenance or Settings and select Descale, or hold the relevant button combination (check your model's manual). The programme runs automatically in several phases — do not stop it once started.

  4. Complete the rinse phase.

When prompted, empty the tank, fill with fresh water, and continue. The machine will run a clean-water rinse to flush out all descaler residue. The alert resets when the cycle is complete.

When to Call a Professional

Descaling is a routine user maintenance task. If the descaling alert returns within a short time of completing a full cycle, contact Philips support.
