DPF Regen Required

International Commercial Truck

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

An International regen required indicator means the DPF is full of soot. Drive at highway speed for 30+ minutes for passive regen, or initiate a manual stationary regen via the dash regen switch.

Affected Models

  • International LT
  • International RH
  • International HV
  • International HX
  • International MV
  • International CV

Common Causes

  • Excessive idle time preventing passive regen completion
  • Short, low-load trips not raising exhaust temperatures enough
  • Failed DPF differential pressure sensor
  • Damaged DOC or DPF substrate from contamination
  • EGR or turbocharger fault producing excessive soot

How to Fix It

  1. Drive at highway speed for 30 minutes.

Sustained 55+ mph operation at moderate load typically triggers automatic passive regen. This often resolves the warning without driver intervention.

  2. Initiate manual stationary regen.

Park in a safe area away from flammable materials. With parking brake set and transmission in neutral, hold the regen switch on the dash. RPM rises and HEST illuminates during regen.

  3. Allow regen to complete.

Stationary regen takes 30–60 minutes. Do not interrupt — interrupted regens worsen soot loading. The dash indicates completion.

  4. Reduce idling time.

Excessive idling is a leading cause of repeated regen needs on International trucks. Use APUs or cab heaters/coolers instead of engine idling. Many fleet operators limit extended idling for this reason.

When to Call a Professional

If manual regen will not start or fails to complete, an International dealer or Navistar-authorised shop can perform a forced regen with ServiceMaxx or replace damaged aftertreatment components.
