DEF Warning
Kenworth Commercial Truck
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Kenworth DEF warning means the SCR system has detected low fluid, poor quality, or a dosing fault. Ignore it and the truck will derate to 5 mph within hours. Address immediately.
Affected Models
- Kenworth T680
- Kenworth T880
- Kenworth W900
- Kenworth T370
- Kenworth T800
Common Causes
- DEF tank low or empty
- Contaminated or expired DEF (over 12 months old)
- DEF crystallisation in the dosing line or injector
- Failed DEF quality sensor
- Failed DEF pump or dosing valve
How to Fix It
-
Check DEF tank level.
Verify the DEF tank has fresh, clean DEF and is at least one-quarter full. Low level is the most common cause and the easiest fix. DEF should be ISO 22241-compliant and less than 12 months from manufacture.
-
Verify DEF quality.
DEF older than 12 months degrades and can trigger quality faults. DEF contaminated with diesel, water, or other fluids is unsafe to use. Drain and refill with fresh DEF if quality is suspect.
-
Inspect for crystallisation.
Look around the DEF dosing valve, injector, and lines. White crystal buildup blocks dosing and triggers faults. Cleaning is best done by a qualified technician.
-
Address before derate.
Kenworth DEF faults escalate quickly: warning → power reduction → 5 mph derate. Get the truck to a service centre before the derate stage. After repair, a regen may be needed to clear the fault.
When to Call a Professional
DEF system faults usually require PACCAR Davie4 or a heavy-duty scan tool to diagnose. A Kenworth or PACCAR dealer can identify and replace failed components.
