DPF Regen Required

Kenworth Commercial Truck

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Kenworth regen required indicator means the DPF is full of soot. Drive at highway speed for 30+ minutes for passive regen, or initiate a manual stationary regen via the dash switch.

Affected Models

  • Kenworth T680
  • Kenworth T880
  • Kenworth W900
  • Kenworth T370
  • Kenworth T800

Common Causes

  • Excessive idling preventing passive regen completion
  • Short trips at low load not raising exhaust temperature enough
  • Failed DPF differential pressure sensor
  • Damaged DOC or DPF substrate
  • Stuck EGR valve causing excessive soot

How to Fix It

  1. Drive at highway speed for 30 minutes.

Sustained operation at 55+ mph at moderate load typically triggers automatic passive regen. This often resolves the warning without driver intervention.

  2. Initiate manual stationary regen.

Park in a safe area away from flammable materials. On most Kenworth trucks, hold the regeneration switch on the dash for several seconds with the parking brake set and transmission in neutral. RPM will rise and HEST will illuminate.

  3. Allow regen to complete fully.

Stationary regen takes 30–60 minutes. Do not interrupt — interrupted regens worsen the soot loading. The dash will indicate when regen completes.

  4. Reduce idling habits to prevent recurrence.

Excessive idling is the leading cause of repeated regen needs. Use cab heater/cooler systems instead of engine idling where possible. Many Kenworth fleets disable extended idle to reduce DPF issues.

When to Call a Professional

If manual regen will not start or complete, a Kenworth or PACCAR dealer can perform a forced regen with Davie4 or replace damaged aftertreatment components.
