DPF Regen Required
Mack Commercial Truck
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Mack regen required indicator means the DPF is loaded with soot. Drive at highway speed for 30+ minutes for passive regen, or initiate a manual stationary regen via the dash switch.
Affected Models
- Mack Anthem
- Mack Granite
- Mack Pinnacle
- Mack TerraPro
- Mack LR
Common Causes
- Excessive idle time blocking passive regen
- Short trips at low load not raising exhaust temperatures enough
- Failed DPF differential pressure sensor
- Damaged DOC or DPF from oil contamination
- EGR or turbocharger fault producing excessive soot
How to Fix It
-
Drive at highway speed for 30 minutes.
Sustained 55+ mph operation at moderate load triggers automatic passive regen. This often resolves the warning without intervention.
-
Initiate manual stationary regen.
Park in a safe area away from flammable materials. With parking brake set and transmission in neutral, hold the regen switch on the dash. RPM rises and HEST illuminates during regen.
-
Allow regen to complete.
Stationary regen takes 30–60 minutes. Do not interrupt — interrupted regens worsen soot loading. The dash indicates completion.
-
Reduce idling habits.
Excessive idling is the most common cause of repeated regen needs on Mack trucks. Use APU systems for cab climate control instead of engine idling.
When to Call a Professional
If manual regen will not start or fails to complete, a Mack dealer can perform a forced regen with PTT or replace damaged aftertreatment components.
