MP8 EGR Derate

Mack Commercial Truck

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Mack MP8 derate from EGR usually traces to: clogged EGR cooler, EGR valve sticking, NOx sensor reading abnormal, or DPF needing regen.
Mack and Volvo share much of the same engine architecture, so MP8 EGR diagnostics resemble D13.
Check soot and DEF status first, then run a parked regen, then get diagnostic codes if the warning persists.

Affected Models

  • Mack Anthem
  • Mack Pinnacle
  • Mack Granite with MP8
  • Mack TerraPro

Common Causes

  • EGR cooler restricted with soot/carbon
  • EGR valve sticking partially open or closed
  • NOx sensor (front or rear) failed
  • DPF requires manual regen
  • DEF dosing system fault
  • Boost pressure sensor reading out of range

How to Fix It

  1. Check DEF and soot indicators.

Dash gauges show DEF level and DPF soot percent.
    Address whichever is low/high first.
Low DEF triggers separate warnings but compounds with EGR issues.
High soot may require parked regen before EGR diagnostics.

  2. Run a parked regen if needed.

If DPF soot is high (yellow icon flashing), park in safe area and initiate parked regen.
Mack procedure varies by model year — typically a button on dash.
Process takes 30-45 minutes; exhaust gets very hot.

  3. Get diagnostic codes via Mack PTT.

Mack Premium Tech Tool reads all stored MP8 fault codes.
Common: SPN 4364 (SCR efficiency), SPN 3226 (rear NOx), SPN 5246 (DPF differential), SPN 102 (boost pressure).
Independent shops with commercial truck scanners can also read.

  4. Address EGR cooler if confirmed.

EGR cooler restriction is the most common MP8 issue at high mileage (500,000+ miles).
Cleaning service (chemical flush) is 800-1500 USD.
Replacement is 2500-4500 USD parts plus 6-10 hours labor.
Cleaning often buys 200,000 more miles.

  5. Replace NOx sensor if pointing there.

NOx sensors fail at 200,000-400,000 miles in MP8s.
Front NOx (between turbo and DPF): 600-1000 USD.
Rear NOx (after SCR): 800-1500 USD.
Both replaced together is common practice.

  6. Don't ignore derate.

    Mack derate steps: 10% → 25% → 5 mph creep.
Each step is the system protecting the engine and complying with EPA regs.
Continuing to drive at full power isn't possible anyway — fix it before scheduled loads suffer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are MP8 and D13 the same engine?

Same architecture, slightly different tuning.
Mack MP8 and Volvo D13 share the block, fuel system, and emissions hardware.
Most diagnostics, parts, and procedures cross over.
This is helpful when finding repair info — Volvo D13 forums often apply to MP8 too.
