mDrive Fault

Mack Commercial Truck

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Mack mDrive is the same gearbox as Volvo I-Shift, with Mack-specific tuning.
Faults that lock it in gear or refuse to shift trace to: clutch actuator sticking, gear position sensor, low transmission oil, or ECU communication issues.
Stop safely, key-cycle for 60 seconds, restart.
If fault clears, drive carefully to a service shop — don't trust the AMT for long hauls until diagnostic clears it.

Affected Models

  • Mack Anthem with mDrive
  • Mack Pinnacle with mDrive
  • Mack Granite with mDrive HD
  • Mack TerraPro

Common Causes

  • Clutch actuator solenoid stuck
  • Gear position (XY-shifter) sensor fault
  • Transmission oil low or wrong spec
  • Range cylinder sensor failure (long range models)
  • Clutch wear at end of life
  • ECU CAN bus communication disrupted

How to Fix It

  1. Pull over safely and key-cycle.

    Stop in a safe place.
    Key off for 60 seconds.
    Restart.
If shifting works again, fault may have been transient — but get diagnostic at next service.

  2. Check transmission oil.

mDrive uses Volvo synthetic oil 97307.
Low oil = shift quality drops and faults appear.
Dipstick on transmission housing — pull, wipe, reinsert, check.
Top up with correct spec only.

  3. Listen for clutch actuator.

On startup, you should hear the clutch actuator solenoid click as it preps the system.
Sluggish or silent = actuator failing.
Replacement is 600-1200 USD parts; 2-4 hours labor.

  4. Get diagnostic codes.

Mack PTT (Premium Tech Tool) reads mDrive codes.
SPN 1761 (gear position), SPN 1762 (clutch position), SPN 561 (range cylinder) are common.
Same codes as I-Shift — repair info crosses over.

  5. Service oil if overdue.

mDrive fluid service every 500,000 miles or 4 years.
Dirty oil causes shift hesitation and false faults.
Service includes filter and oil — 800-1500 USD at dealer.

  6. Use manual mode if AMT is unreliable.

mDrive has manual mode — driver controls upshift/downshift.
Useful as a temporary workaround if AMT auto-shifting hesitates.
But mechanical problems (clutch wear, sensor failure) need actual repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will mDrive work in cold weather differently?

mDrive shift quality changes with cold oil.
Below 0°F, expect a few sluggish shifts in the first 5-10 miles until oil warms.
This is normal.
Persistent rough shifting after warm-up = real fault.
