MP Engine Fault

Mack Commercial Truck

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Mack amber engine warning means the ECM has stored a fault on the MP-7 or MP-8 engine. A J1939 scan tool reads SPN and FMI codes. Mack uses Volvo/Mack PTT diagnostic software for detailed work.

Affected Models

  • Mack Anthem
  • Mack Granite
  • Mack Pinnacle
  • Mack TerraPro
  • Mack LR

Common Causes

  • MP-7 or MP-8 engine sensor fault
  • EGR valve carbon buildup or actuator failure
  • Turbocharger actuator fault
  • Aftertreatment NOx sensor or DEF dosing fault
  • Coolant or oil temperature sensor failure

How to Fix It

  1. Check warning urgency.

Amber check engine = stored fault, usually drivable home. Red stop engine or rapidly flashing amber = serious — pull over safely as soon as possible.

  2. Read codes with a J1939 scanner.

Plug a heavy-duty scanner into the J1939 connector under the dash. SPN identifies the component, FMI identifies the fault mode. JPRO and Noregon DLA are popular tools that work well on Mack.

  3. Inspect basic items.

Check oil, coolant, and DEF levels. Look for visible leaks, disconnected hoses, and damaged sensors. Many fault codes have simple physical causes.

  4. Take to a Mack dealer for complex faults.

Mack PTT is required for most actuator tests, parameter changes, and detailed component data. A Mack dealer can perform full diagnostics, including EGR cleaning, sensor calibration, and ECM updates.

When to Call a Professional

Mack PTT (Premium Tech Tool) is the official Mack/Volvo diagnostic software. It is restricted to dealers and authorised shops. For complex faults, a Mack dealer is the most efficient route.
