Starter Relay Failure

Mack Commercial Truck

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Mack truck won't crank or cranks intermittently usually traces to: corroded battery cables, bad starter relay, dead battery, or starter solenoid contacts worn.
Test battery voltage at rest (12.6V+).
Listen at the relay during key turn — single click = relay good, no click = relay or wiring fault.
Starter relays are 30-80 USD; replace before assuming starter motor.

Affected Models

  • Mack Anthem
  • Mack Pinnacle
  • Mack Granite
  • Mack TerraPro

Common Causes

  • Battery weak or terminals corroded (most common)
  • Starter relay contacts worn
  • Starter solenoid failed
  • Loose ground at engine block
  • Ignition switch failing
  • Anti-theft system blocking start

How to Fix It

  1. Test battery voltage.

    Multimeter to battery posts.
    Engine off: should read 12.6-12.8V.
Below 12.0V = too weak to crank reliably.
Charge or jump-start as test step.
If truck cranks fine after jumping, battery or charging system is the issue.

  2. Inspect cables and grounds.

Battery cables: look for corrosion at posts and ring terminals.
Engine ground strap: bolted to block.
Cab ground strap: from cab to frame.
Loose or corroded grounds add resistance that prevents cranking with full current.

  3. Listen at the starter relay.

    Have helper turn key.
Listen near the starter relay (usually mounted on the firewall or fender).
Single 'click' = relay engaged, current flowing.
No click = relay or wiring not getting signal.
Multiple clicks = relay chattering, low voltage issue.

  4. Test the relay with a jumper.

Use insulated screwdriver to bridge the two large terminals on the starter solenoid (battery to motor).
WARNING: truck must be in neutral, parking brake set, before doing this.
If starter spins, the relay or wiring to the solenoid is bad.
If no spin, the starter motor itself is failing.

  5. Replace the starter relay.

Mack starter relays are 30-80 USD.
Mounted on firewall or fender, easy access.
Two large bolts and 2-4 small wires.
    5-15 minutes to swap.
Cheap fix that resolves many no-crank complaints.

  6. Check anti-theft if no electrical fault.

If everything tests good but truck still won't crank, anti-theft may be locked.
Symptoms: dash lights normal, no relay click, no fuel pump prime.
Mack diagnostic via PTT identifies anti-theft state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my truck sometimes start fine and sometimes not?

Intermittent cranking issues are usually corroded connections somewhere in the starting circuit.
Battery posts, cable terminals, or engine ground.
The corrosion creates marginal contact — sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.
Clean every connection in the starting circuit.
