DEF Warning

Peterbilt Commercial Truck

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

A Peterbilt DEF warning means the SCR system has detected low fluid, poor quality, or a dosing fault. Ignoring the warning leads to engine derate. Resolve immediately.

Affected Models

  • Peterbilt 579
  • Peterbilt 389
  • Peterbilt 567
  • Peterbilt 520
  • Peterbilt 337

Common Causes

  • DEF tank low or empty
  • Contaminated or expired DEF
  • DEF crystallisation in dosing components
  • Failed DEF quality sensor
  • Failed DEF pump or dosing valve

How to Fix It

  1. Check DEF tank level.

Verify the tank has fresh DEF (less than 12 months from manufacture) and is at least one-quarter full. This is the most common cause and quickest fix.

  2. Confirm DEF quality.

DEF older than 12 months degrades. DEF contaminated with diesel, water, or other liquids must be drained. Use only ISO 22241-compliant DEF.

  3. Inspect for crystallisation.

Look at the DEF dosing valve, injector, and connecting lines for white crystal deposits. Crystallisation blocks dosing. A technician can clean affected components.

  4. Address quickly to avoid derate.

Peterbilt DEF faults escalate over hours: warning → power reduction → 5 mph derate. Resolve the issue before derate to avoid being stranded. After repair, the ECM may need a regen cycle to fully clear.

When to Call a Professional

DEF system diagnostic typically requires PACCAR Davie4 or a heavy-duty scan tool. A PACCAR-trained technician can identify and replace failed components.
