DPF Regen Required

Peterbilt Commercial Truck

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Peterbilt regen required indicator means the DPF is full of soot. Drive at highway speed for 30+ minutes for passive regen, or initiate manual stationary regen via the dash regen switch.

Affected Models

  • Peterbilt 579
  • Peterbilt 389
  • Peterbilt 567
  • Peterbilt 520
  • Peterbilt 337

Common Causes

  • Excessive idle time preventing passive regen
  • Short, low-load trips not raising exhaust temperature enough
  • Failed DPF differential pressure sensor
  • Damaged DOC or DPF substrate from contamination
  • Stuck EGR producing excessive soot

How to Fix It

  1. Drive at highway speed for 30 minutes.

Sustained operation at 55+ mph at moderate load triggers automatic passive regen. This often resolves the warning without intervention.

  2. Initiate manual stationary regen.

Park in a safe area away from flammable materials. With the parking brake set and transmission in neutral, hold the regen switch on the dash. RPM rises and HEST illuminates.

  3. Allow regen to complete.

Stationary regen takes 30–60 minutes. Do not interrupt the cycle. The dash indicates when regen finishes.

  4. Reduce idling to prevent recurrence.

Idling time is the leading cause of repeated regen needs. Use APUs or cab heaters/coolers instead of engine idling. Many fleets configure trucks to limit extended idling.

When to Call a Professional

If manual regen will not start or complete, a PACCAR dealer can perform a forced regen with Davie4 or replace damaged aftertreatment components.
