Attempting to Reconnect
Riot Games League of Legends
Severity: CriticalWhat it means
The reconnect loop means League of Legends is trying to connect you back to a match but keeps failing.
You are stuck between the reconnect screen and a failed connection.
The most common fix is restarting the game client entirely.
Affected Models
- PC (Windows)
- Mac
Common Causes
- Internet connection dropped during champion select or loading
- Riot servers had a hiccup during match creation
- Firewall blocking League's connection to the game server
- The match was terminated (remake or server crash) but the client does not know
- Corrupted game files
How to Fix It
-
Close the League client completely and reopen it.
Use Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to make sure all League processes are closed.
Reopen the client — if the match is still active, it will prompt you to reconnect. -
If the reconnect button keeps appearing but the match is over: wait 5-10 minutes.
Sometimes the client thinks a match is still running after it ended (ghost game).
After a few minutes, the server catches up and the reconnect prompt disappears. -
Run the Hextech Repair Tool.
Riot provides the Hextech Repair Tool for fixing client issues.
Download it from Riot's support site and run it to repair corrupted files. -
Check your firewall and allow League of Legends through.
Make sure both LeagueClient.exe and League of Legends.exe are allowed through your firewall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I get punished for being stuck in a reconnect loop?
Unfortunately, yes.
The system sees you as AFK/disconnected.
You may receive a LeaverBuster warning or a queue penalty.
If it happens due to a server issue, the penalties are usually lighter.
What is a ghost game?
A ghost game is when the server thinks a match is still running after it already ended.
Your client shows a reconnect button for a match that no longer exists.
It resolves on its own after a few minutes.
