Won't Turn On

Google Chromebook

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Hold the Refresh key + Power button together for 10 seconds — this performs a Chromebook hard reset (EC reset). If the screen stays black, plug in the charger and wait 30 minutes before trying again. Hold just the Power button for 10 seconds if the Refresh reset does not work.

Affected Models

  • All Chromebook models (Acer, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, Samsung)
  • Chrome OS 100 and later
  • ChromeOS Flex on legacy hardware

Common Causes

  • Battery fully discharged with no reserve to power on
  • Embedded Controller (EC) firmware frozen requiring a hardware reset
  • Chrome OS update stuck mid-install corrupting the boot partition
  • Display cable loose after a drop
  • Corrupted verified boot partition

How to Fix It

  1. Perform an EC (Embedded Controller) reset

Hold the Refresh key (circular arrow, top row) and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds. This resets the hardware controller that manages power — it is not a data reset.

  2. Charge first

Plug in the original charger and leave it for 30–60 minutes before attempting to power on. Some Chromebooks show no response at all when the battery is fully depleted.

  3. Check the charging LED

Most Chromebooks have a small LED near the charging port. Orange or amber means charging; green means full. No LED means the charger, cable, or charging port is not making contact.

  4. Try a different charger

If your Chromebook uses USB-C, try a USB-C PD charger rated at 45W or higher. If it uses a barrel connector, try the charger from an identical model.

  5. Enter Chrome OS Recovery Mode

Hold Esc + Refresh + Power simultaneously. If the recovery screen appears, Chrome OS can re-download and reinstall the operating system, fixing a corrupted boot partition.

When to Call a Professional

If the Chromebook does not respond after an EC reset and 2 hours of charging, and the charging LED is active, the mainboard or display cable needs professional inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chromebook power light is on but screen is black — what does it mean?

The Chromebook is receiving power but the display is not activating. Press the Brightness Up key (top row) to check if the screen is on at minimum brightness. If still black, try the EC reset (Refresh + Power for 10 seconds).

Chromebook shows a white screen with an exclamation mark — what does it mean?

This is the Chrome OS verified boot error screen — the operating system partition is corrupted. Insert a Chrome OS recovery USB (made with the Chromebook Recovery Utility on another device) to reinstall Chrome OS.

Chromebook won't turn on after an update — how to fix?

An interrupted Chrome OS update can corrupt the boot partition. Enter Recovery Mode (Esc + Refresh + Power) and follow the steps to download and reinstall Chrome OS — your Google account data will be restored from the cloud.
