Black Screen

Apple MacBook

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

First press any key or move the trackpad — the MacBook may simply be asleep. Then press the Brightness Up key (F2) repeatedly in case the display is on but brightness is at zero. If the keyboard backlight responds or you can hear the fan but the screen stays black, try a force restart: hold the power button for 10 seconds.

Affected Models

  • MacBook Air (all models)
  • MacBook Pro (all models)
  • MacBook 12-inch (2015–2019)

Common Causes

  • Display brightness set to minimum — screen appears off but the system is running normally
  • Deep sleep (hibernation) not waking correctly
  • SMC fault on Intel MacBooks affecting display power
  • Loose or damaged display flex cable after a drop or screen replacement
  • Failed backlight — display is on but backlight is not powering the panel
  • GPU fault causing the display output to fail

How to Fix It

  1. Check brightness. Press the Brightness Up key (F2 or the key with sun icons) several times. The screen may be on at zero brightness.

This is surprisingly common — accidental keystrokes or a keyboard shortcut can set brightness to minimum.

  2. Perform a force restart: hold the power button for 10 seconds until the MacBook shuts off, wait 5 seconds, then press power once to restart.

A force restart clears any frozen display or graphics state and reinitialises the display hardware on boot.

  3. Connect an external display (via USB-C adapter or HDMI). If the external display works but the built-in screen stays black, the problem is with the internal display hardware.

An external display working confirms the logic board and GPU are fine. The fault is then isolated to the display cable, backlight, or LCD panel.

  4. Reset the SMC (Intel MacBooks). Hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds, release, then press Power to start. This resets display and power management.

Apple Silicon MacBooks reset their equivalent through the force restart (hold power 10 seconds) — there is no separate SMC reset step.

Frequently Asked Questions

MacBook screen is black but I can see a faint image with a flashlight — what does it mean?

A faint image visible with a bright flashlight confirms the LCD is working but the backlight has failed. The backlight is powered by an inverter board (older models) or an LED driver on the logic board (newer models). This is a hardware repair — an Apple Authorised Service Provider or repair shop can replace the backlight.
