Won't Turn On

Apple MacBook

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a hard reset. If the MacBook is an Apple Silicon model (M1, M2, M3, M4), press and hold the power button for 10 seconds until the startup options appear or the screen goes dark, then release. If that fails, connect the MagSafe or USB-C charger and wait 15 minutes before trying again — a completely flat battery shows no response at all.

Affected Models

  • MacBook Air (all models, Intel and Apple Silicon)
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch, 14-inch, 15-inch, 16-inch
  • MacBook (12-inch, 2015–2019)

Common Causes

  • Battery completely discharged — no reserve to power on
  • SMC (System Management Controller) fault on Intel MacBooks
  • Failed macOS update stuck mid-install
  • Hardware fault — logic board, display, or power circuitry
  • Liquid damage causing a short circuit in the power path

How to Fix It

  1. Connect the charger and wait 15–30 minutes before attempting to power on. A completely flat MacBook battery will not respond until it has a minimum charge.

MacBooks with USB-C charging should see a battery indicator on screen after a few minutes of charging. If no indicator appears after 30 minutes, try a different cable and charger.

  2. Perform a force restart. On Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 and later): hold the power button for 10 seconds until the screen goes dark, release, wait 5 seconds, then press once to start. On Intel MacBooks: hold the power button for 10 seconds.

This is the modern equivalent of removing the battery — it clears any frozen state in the power management system.

  3. Reset the SMC (Intel MacBooks only). For MacBooks with a T2 chip: hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds, release all keys, then press Power. For older Intel MacBooks: hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 7 seconds.

Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 and later) do not have a separate SMC — the force restart covers this step for those models.

  4. If the MacBook shows a folder icon with a question mark on startup, the startup disk is corrupted or not found. Hold Command + R on startup to enter macOS Recovery and reinstall macOS.

On Apple Silicon, hold the power button until startup options appear, then click Options to enter recovery mode. Your data is preserved during a macOS reinstall from Recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

MacBook has a flashing question mark folder — what does it mean?

The folder with a question mark means the MacBook cannot find its startup disk. Either the internal SSD has failed or macOS is corrupted. Enter Recovery Mode (Command + R on Intel, hold power button on Apple Silicon) to try reinstalling macOS.

MacBook makes a startup chime but screen stays black — what to do?

The chime means the hardware is working. The problem is with the display — try adjusting screen brightness (F2 key), connecting an external display to test, or pressing Caps Lock to see if the keyboard LED responds. An external display working while the built-in screen stays black points to a display cable or backlight fault.
