Startup Disk Full

Apple MacBook

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

When macOS shows your startup disk is almost full, open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Storage. The largest categories (Applications, Documents, System Data) show where space is being used. Empty the Trash first — items in Trash still occupy disk space. Then remove large video files, delete unused apps, and enable iCloud Drive to offload documents and Desktop files.

Affected Models

  • MacBook Air (all models)
  • MacBook Pro (all models)
  • MacBook 12-inch (2015–2019)

Common Causes

  • Large video files, downloads, or disk images filling up storage
  • Trash not emptied — deleted files still occupy space until Trash is emptied
  • Time Machine local snapshots accumulating on the startup disk
  • Unused applications with large data folders (virtual machines, games)
  • System Data or cached data from streaming apps (music, video downloads)

How to Fix It

  1. Empty the Trash. Right-click the Trash icon in the Dock and choose Empty Trash. Files deleted anywhere on the Mac are not freed until Trash is emptied.

Large files such as old videos or disk images moved to Trash days ago can easily account for tens of gigabytes.

  2. Open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Storage and click the Manage button. Review the recommendations — Store in iCloud, Optimise Storage, and Empty Trash Automatically are the most effective quick wins.

Store in iCloud moves your Desktop and Documents folders to iCloud, keeping only recently used files local. This is the single fastest way to recover space on a MacBook with limited storage.

  3. Find and delete large files. In Finder, press Command + F, set the search to This Mac, add a File Size filter, and set it to greater than 500 MB. Delete anything you no longer need.

Old disk image files (.dmg), downloaded video files, and virtual machine images are common large-file culprits. Do not delete files you do not recognise in system folders.

  4. Check for large app data. The Library > Application Support and Library > Containers folders can hold gigabytes of cached data from apps like Xcode, Logic Pro, or Final Cut Pro.

Xcode simulator data and downloaded documentation can exceed 50 GB. In Xcode, go to Preferences > Platforms and delete simulator runtimes you no longer need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does macOS need free space to work properly?

macOS uses free disk space for virtual memory (swap files), temporary files during app operations, and system updates. When the disk is nearly full, the system slows dramatically and some operations fail. Apple recommends keeping at least 10–15% of total disk capacity free.
