Format Required
BlackVue Dash Cam
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
BlackVue Format Required means the camera found the SD card but cannot use it in its current state — typically because the card was formatted with the wrong file system, contains corruption that a full format can repair, or is a newly inserted card that has not been prepared for dash cam use. Format the card through the BlackVue app or via a computer to clear this message.
Affected Models
- BlackVue DR900X-2CH
- BlackVue DR750X-2CH
- BlackVue DR970X-2CH
- BlackVue DR590X-2CH
- BlackVue DR770X-2CH
Common Causes
- A new or used SD card was inserted that has not been formatted for BlackVue use
- The card's file system is FAT32 instead of exFAT (required for cards 64GB and above)
- The card was formatted on a different device (smartphone, camera) using a non-compatible format
- File system corruption requires a full format to repair
How to Fix It
-
Format using the BlackVue app — the recommended method
Connect to the BlackVue camera via its Wi-Fi hotspot in the BlackVue app. Go to Settings > SD Card Management > Format SD Card. Confirm the format. BlackVue sets up the correct folder structure and file system automatically. This is the most reliable method for preparing a card for recording.
-
Format on a Windows PC if the app is unavailable
Insert the card into a USB card reader. In Windows Explorer, right-click the card drive and select Format. For 64GB and larger cards, choose exFAT. For 32GB cards, choose FAT32. Uncheck Quick Format to do a full format that checks for bad sectors. Click Start and wait for completion.
-
Format on a Mac if needed
Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). Select the SD card in the left panel. Click Erase. Set Format to ExFAT for 64GB+ cards. Click Erase to format. After inserting the card back in the BlackVue, the camera will set up its folder structure on the first power-on.
-
Back up any existing footage before formatting
Format erases all content on the card. If you need to save existing clips, copy the BLACKVUE folder from the card to your computer before proceeding. After the format, the BlackVue will recreate the recording folders automatically.
-
Restart the camera after formatting to confirm the error is cleared
After formatting, reinsert the card, reconnect the camera to your vehicle's power, and wait 30 seconds. The BlackVue should start up normally with recording active (status LED turns red for recording). The Format Required message should not reappear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Format Required delete all my existing footage?
Formatting erases everything on the SD card, including all recorded clips, event files, and parking mode footage. If any clips are important, copy the BLACKVUE folder to your computer before formatting. BlackVue footage can be played back using the free BlackVue Viewer desktop app.
How often should I format the SD card in a BlackVue camera?
BlackVue recommends reformatting the SD card every 2–4 weeks during regular use. This prevents file system fragmentation and corruption caused by continuous overwrite recording. You can automate this via Settings > SD Card Management > Auto Format — set it to format every 2 weeks for low-maintenance operation.
