SD Card Error
BlackVue Dash Cam
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
BlackVue SD Card Error means the camera detected a problem reading the microSD card — the card may be corrupted, incompatible, full, or physically loose in the slot. The camera cannot record while this error is active, meaning incidents will not be captured. Format the card using the BlackVue app or replace it with a compatible high-endurance card to resolve the issue.
Affected Models
- BlackVue DR900X-2CH
- BlackVue DR750X-2CH
- BlackVue DR970X-2CH
- BlackVue DR590X-2CH
- BlackVue DR770X-2CH
Common Causes
- The SD card has developed file system corruption after an unexpected power cut during a write
- The card is not seated properly in the slot — it has shifted due to vibration
- The SD card has reached the end of its write cycle life and needs replacing
- An incompatible or slow SD card (Class 10 minimum required, UHS-I recommended) is installed
- The card slot contacts are dirty or oxidised
How to Fix It
-
Remove and re-seat the SD card
Eject the BlackVue from its mount and remove the SD card from the slot at the back of the camera. Inspect the card and slot for dust, moisture, or bent contacts. Reinsert the card firmly until it clicks. Remount and restart the camera to see if the error clears.
-
Format the SD card using the BlackVue app
Open the BlackVue app on your phone, connect to the camera via Wi-Fi, and navigate to Settings > SD Card Management > Format. BlackVue format ensures the card is prepared with the correct file system for the camera. Formatting erases all existing footage — back up any needed clips first.
-
Format the SD card on a computer if the app format fails
Insert the card into a computer using a card reader. On Windows, right-click the drive and choose Format, selecting exFAT (for cards 64GB and larger) or FAT32 (32GB and smaller). On Mac, use Disk Utility. After formatting, insert the card back into the BlackVue and restart.
-
Check that the SD card meets BlackVue's minimum specification
BlackVue cameras require a Class 10 or UHS-I rated card for reliable recording. They also require a high-endurance card rated for continuous write cycles — standard photography cards are not designed for 24/7 recording and fail prematurely. BlackVue-approved cards include Samsung PRO Endurance, Lexar PLAY, and BlackVue-branded cards.
-
Replace the SD card if formatting does not clear the error
If the error persists after formatting and re-seating, the card itself has failed. Replace it with a fresh high-endurance microSD card of the correct capacity for your model (BlackVue recommends 64GB–256GB depending on the model). After installing a new card, format it from the BlackVue app before first use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace the SD card in a BlackVue dash cam?
High-endurance SD cards used in continuous-recording dash cams typically last 1–3 years depending on card capacity and recording hours. A 128GB Samsung PRO Endurance card is rated for approximately 40,000 hours of recording. Check the card's health periodically using the BlackVue app — it shows SD card status and write cycle estimates.
Will BlackVue record to RAM if the SD card fails?
No — BlackVue cameras require the SD card to function and will not record to internal memory. When SD Card Error is displayed, the camera is not recording any footage, including parking mode events. Resolve the SD card issue as soon as possible to restore recording coverage.
