Cannot Connect to Garmin Drive

Garmin Dash Cam

Severity: Minor

What it means

'Couldn't connect' / 'Cannot connect to Garmin Drive' means your phone and the dash cam aren't talking over their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth link.
You can't see the live view, download clips, or change settings from the app until it's fixed.
Important: the camera keeps recording perfectly fine — this is purely a phone-to-camera connection problem, not a camera fault.

Affected Models

  • Garmin Dash Cam 47 / 57 / 67W with the Garmin Drive app
  • Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2
  • Garmin Dash Cam Tandem
  • Garmin Dash Cam Live

Common Causes

  • Phone too far from the camera — its Wi-Fi is short-range, you need to be in the car
  • Camera's Wi-Fi was switched off in its own menu
  • Bluetooth pairing dropped after a phone OS update
  • Garmin Drive app needs updating
  • Phone revoked the app's Location or Local Network / Nearby Devices permission
  • Two phones both trying to pair with the same camera

How to Fix It

  1. Get in the car and close to the camera.

The camera's Wi-Fi only reaches a few metres.
Sit in the driver's seat with the engine running so the camera's powered, and try connecting from there — not from the house with the car on the drive.

  2. Forget the camera and re-pair.

In the Garmin Drive app, remove the dash cam, then add it again from scratch.
In your phone's Wi-Fi settings, also 'forget' the camera's network if it shows up there.
A fresh pairing clears most stuck connections.

  3. Check the app's permissions.

Garmin Drive needs Location and Local Network (on iPhone) or Location and Nearby Devices (on Android) to find the camera.
Open your phone's settings for the Garmin Drive app and turn those on.
Phones quietly revoke these after updates, and without them the app simply can't see the camera.

  4. Update the app and the camera firmware.

Update Garmin Drive from the app store.
Then check for a camera firmware update — the app prompts you when one's available, or you can use Garmin Express on a PC with the memory card.
A version mismatch between app and camera can block the link.

  5. Restart everything and try once more.

Unplug the camera for 30 seconds and plug it back in.
Toggle your phone's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off and on.
Force-close the Garmin Drive app and reopen it.
Then try to connect — a clean slate on both ends fixes a surprising number of cases.
