Voice Control Unavailable
Garmin Dash Cam
Severity: MinorWhat it means
'Voice control is unavailable' means the camera can't use its 'OK, Garmin' voice commands.
The usual reasons are the device language isn't one that supports voice commands, the feature got switched off, the cabin's too noisy for the mic, or a firmware update reset the setting.
This is a convenience feature only — the camera records normally without it.
Affected Models
- Garmin Dash Cam 47 / 57 / 67W
- Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 (voice control via the app)
- Garmin Dash Cam Tandem
- Garmin Dash Cam Live
Common Causes
- Voice control turned off in the camera menu
- Device language set to one that doesn't support voice commands
- Very loud cabin — open windows, loud music — drowning out the wake phrase
- Audio recording / microphone disabled (on some models that also disables voice commands)
- A firmware update reset preferences
How to Fix It
-
Check it's switched on.
Go to Settings > Voice Control (or Settings > Camera > Voice Control depending on the model) and make sure it's enabled.
It's easy to knock off by accident in the menus. -
Check the device language.
Voice commands only work in supported languages.
If you changed the camera's language, switch it back to a supported one — or, if your model allows a separate voice-command language, set that.
An unsupported language is the single most common reason for this message. -
Quiet the cabin.
Close the windows, turn the music down, and speak the wake phrase clearly.
The microphone has to pick 'OK, Garmin' out of road, wind, and engine noise — give it a fighting chance. -
Make sure the microphone isn't disabled.
On some Garmin models, turning off audio recording also turns off the mic for voice commands.
If you've disabled audio recording, voice control goes with it.
Turn the microphone back on if you want commands to work. -
Update the firmware.
If voice control disappeared right after a firmware update, installing the next update — or re-applying the current one via Garmin Express — usually brings it back.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the wake phrase and what can I say?
On Garmin dash cams it's 'OK, Garmin', then a command — for example 'save video', 'take a picture', 'start Travelapse', or 'turn audio off'.
Pause for a beat after 'OK, Garmin' so the camera registers the wake phrase before you give the command, otherwise it can miss it.
