Format Required
Nextbase Dash Cam
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Nextbase 'Format required' (sometimes 'Please format SD card' or 'SD card needs to be formatted') means the camera detected a card but can't read its filesystem.
Reasons range from a brand-new unformatted card, to a card formatted on a PC with the wrong settings, to corruption from a bad shutdown.
Format in-camera and you're back in business — but copy any old recordings off first if you need them.
Affected Models
- All Nextbase dash cam models
- Particularly common on first install of a new card
- Common after a card is used in a phone or PC and returned to the camera
Common Causes
- New card straight out of the package — never formatted
- Card formatted as NTFS or exFAT (camera wants FAT32 for cards under 64 GB)
- Filesystem corrupted by a sudden power loss during write
- Card was used in another device that wrote different filesystem metadata
- Card has bad sectors and the filesystem table is in one of them
How to Fix It
-
Decide if you need to recover anything first.
If this is a new card, skip to the format step.
If this is a card you've been using and there are recordings on it, pop the card out and try reading on a PC or phone first.
Sometimes the camera fails but a PC can still read — copy what you want to keep before formatting. -
Format the card in the camera.
Insert the card.
Press Menu → Setup → Format SD Card → Confirm.
The camera writes a fresh FAT32 filesystem and is ready to record within seconds.
Always format in the camera; the camera knows the optimal cluster size and partition layout for its firmware. -
Check the card was inserted correctly.
Some Nextbase models have a specific orientation indicator near the slot.
Insert with the gold contacts facing the indicated direction.
If you accidentally inserted upside down (the slot still accepts it), the camera reads gibberish and shows 'Format required'.
Eject, flip, reinsert. -
If format fails, try a different card.
If the camera reports 'Format failed' instead of completing successfully, the card has hardware issues.
Replace with a new high-endurance microSD (SanDisk High Endurance or Samsung Pro Endurance) and format that.
Don't keep trying to use a failing card — it will lose recordings randomly. -
Avoid future corruption.
Always power off the camera with the power button before unplugging or removing the card.
Hard cuts (just unplugging when the engine stops) can corrupt the filesystem mid-write.
If your car kills accessory power instantly, plug the camera into a permanent (always-on) supply with a hardwire kit, or a battery pack — gives the camera time to flush its buffers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I format the card?
Most dash cam manufacturers recommend formatting every 4-6 weeks.
This isn't the same as Nextbase's 'Format Required' error — proactive formatting prevents fragmentation and keeps the loop write smooth.
Set a calendar reminder.
Save anything you want to keep before each format; the action is destructive.
